1. Small Sanitation Systems – Treatment Efficiency, Sustainability and Implementation
Abstract : Current socio-technical wastewater system paradigms are being challenged by emerging global issues such as climate change, environmental degradation and scarcity of resources. Thus, exploration of innovative new urban water management solutions is required that enable closure of resource loops. READ MORE

2. Anammox-based systems for nitrogen removal from mainstream municipal wastewater
Abstract : Nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater with the application of deammonification process offers an operational cost reduction, especially if it is combined with a maximal use of organic content of wastewater for biogas production. In this thesis, two approaches for integration of the deammonification process into the municipal wastewater treatment scheme were studied. READ MORE

3. Microalgae at wastewater treatment in cold climate
Abstract : The thesis concludes that microalgae may improve wastewater treatment in ponds in cold climate, from a treatment perspective as well as a sustainability perspective. A literature review revealed that the microalgae biomass produced may find economic use, depending on what species will come to dominate, since there are many possible products from microalgae biomass. 4. Sustainability performance of blue-green infrastructure across seasons and with various designs
Abstract : The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) affect societal development within multiple sectors, both strategically and at street level. For instance, SDG 6 and SDG 11 have contributed to a shift in urban stormwater management that has traditionally been pipe-based, including only control of runoff volumes, to a more multi-functional nature-based blue-green infrastructure (BGI), where"blue" areas are characterized by (temporarily or permanent) open water and "green" areas by vegetative systems. 5. Wastewater treatment from pharmaceutical substances with filamentous fungi
Abstract : The ever-increasing concern about the widespread occurrence of pharmaceutical substances in the aquatic environment has been recognized as an emerging environmental issue as it can cause undesirable effects on the ecosystem and human health. The current wastewater treatment methods are not designed to treat municipal wastewater from the contamination of various pharmaceutical substances. READ MORE
