  1. 16. The effects of haemodialysis and metabolic acidosis on protein metabolism

    Author : Erland Löfberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : haemodialysis; metabolic acidosis; skeletal muscle; protein metabolism; amino acids; branched-chain amino acids; flooding dose; ribosomes; glucocorticoids;

    Abstract : Chronic renal failure and uraemia are characterised by gradual loss of renal function with an accumulation of metabolic and toxic waste products as well as disturbances in several organs and hormone functions. Two factors affect the catabolism in renal failure - i.e., the haemodialysis procedure and metabolic acidosis. READ MORE

  2. 17. Protein synthesis in vitro in skeletal muscle as an indicator of feeding conditions

    Author : Bernt Lund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The activity of protein synthesis in vitro was determined using ribosomes isolated from rats, domestic animals and fish. The activity of rat skeletal muscle ribosomes was influenced by small differences in the nutritional quality of dietary proteins. READ MORE

  3. 18. Early steps in the biogenesis of the bc1 complex in yeast mitochondria : The role of the Cbp3-Cbp6 complex in cytochrome b synthesis and assembly

    Author : Steffi Gruschke; Martin Ott; Dennis Winge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mitochondria; respiratory chain assembly; bc1 complex; mitochondrial gene expression; translational regulation; hemylation; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The inner membrane of mitochondria harbors the complexes of the respiratory chain and the ATP synthase, which perform the key metabolic process oxidative phosphorylation. These complexes are composed of subunits from two different genetic origins: the majority of constituents is synthesized on cytosolic ribosomes and imported into mitochondria, but a handful of proteins, which represent core catalytic subunits, are encoded in the organellar DNA and translated on mitochondrial ribosomes. 4. 19. Dynamic Organization of Molecular Machines in Bacteria

    Author : Bhupender Singh; Santanu Dasgupta; Leif A. Kirsebom; Don G. Ennis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecular machines; bacteria; cell cycle; ribosome; replisome; divisome; spore; E. coli; H. pylori; Mycobacteria; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Bacterial cells were once treated as membrane-enclosed bags of cytoplasm: a homogeneous, undifferentiated suspension in which polymers (proteins, nucleic acids, etc.) and small molecules diffused freely to interact with each other. READ MORE

  5. 20. Molecular Interplay of Antibiotics on the Bacterial Ribosome

    Author : Narayan Prasad Parajuli; Suparna Sanyal; Michael Y. Pavlov; Chandra Sekhar Mandava; Axel Innis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; Translation; Antibiotics; Aminoglycoside; Thermorubin; Protein synthesis; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : Inhibition of protein synthesis is one of the most common modes of action for medically useful antibiotics. This thesis presents the mechanistic studies of two chemically distinct classes of antibiotics that target bacterial ribosomes –aminoglycosides and thermorubin. READ MORE
