  2. 2. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation

    Author : Martin Fredholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; strain echocardiography; right heart catheterization; cardiac surgery; heart failure; levosimendan; milrinone; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; systole; diastole; preload; afterload; pacing; longitudinal function; ventricular dimensions; ventricular interdependence;

    Abstract : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 3. 3. Three-dimensional assessment of cardiac function; When right is wrong

    Author : Ellen Ostenfeld; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Key words Three-dimensional echocardiography; cardiac magnetic resonance imaging; cardiac function; volumes; atria; ventricles; pulmonary hypertension; right heart catheterization; right ventricular pressure load.;

    Abstract : Assessment of the right side of the heart is important in patients with heart disease; especially in patient with elevated pressure in the lung circulation. Decreased right ventricular function and elevated pressure in the right atrium are of poor prognostic value. READ MORE

  4. 4. Functional and morphological MR studies in congenital cardiovascular malformations

    Author : Catarina Holmqvist; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medicinsk instrumentering; tomografi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; Contrast-enhanced MR angiography.; Coarctation; Intra-cardiac shunts; Conduits; Tetralogy of Fallot; Function; Flow; MR velocity mapping; Infants; Children; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Angiocardiography; Heart; Congenital heart defects; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to evaluate new MR techniques permitting qualitative and quantitative analysis of cardiac function and measurement of velocity and flow, and later on contrast-enhanced MR angiography, techniques largely unexplored in children with CHD. Infants with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect were examined pre-operatively. READ MORE

  5. 5. Vardenafil and methylarginines in pulmonary hypertension

    Author : Anna Sandqvist; Gerhard Wikström; Jörn Schneede; Amrita Ahluwalia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vardenafil; pulmonary hypertension; pharmacokinetics; haemodynamics; right heart catheterization; adenosine; dimethylarginines; phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors; endothelin receptor antagonists; klinisk farmakologi; Clinical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare condition characterized by endothelial dysfunction and vascular remodelling, leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and right ventricular heart failure. Endothelial dysfunction is associated with an imbalance between vasoconstrictor compounds, such as endothelin and thromboxane A2, and vasodilator compounds, such as prostacyclin and nitric oxide (NO).
