1. Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy : Is it right?
Abstract : Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited heart disease, where sudden cardiac death in young seemingly healthy persons may be the first symptom. There is a need for more sensitive and accurate diagnostic methods to detect signs of disease, at an early stage and in relatives of affected individuals. READ MORE

2. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation
Abstract : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 3. Ventricular rotation and the rotation axis : a new concept in cardiac function
Abstract : Background: The twisting motion of the left ventricle (LV), with clockwise rotation at the base and counter clockwise rotation at the apex during systole, is a vital part of LV function. Even though LV rotation has been studied for decades, the rotation pattern has not been described in detail. READ MORE

4. Lung Emphysema & Cardiac Function
Abstract : Patients with severe lung emphysema have poor quality of life because of impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Concomitant heart disease in severe emphysema is well recognised. The prevailing view is that mainly the right side of the heart is involved, while the issue of left ventricular (LV) involvement is less studied. READ MORE

5. Right ventricular function in pulmonary embolism
Abstract : Patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction are known to be at risk of in-hospital clinical worsening and PE-related mortality. Even in patients with a preserved systemic arterial pressure, the RV dysfunction indicates a higher risk, thus affecting the patients’ level of care and the therapeutic approach. READ MORE
