  1. 1. Ultracold rubidium atoms in periodic potentials

    Author : Robert Saers; Anders Kastberg; Svante Jonsell; Jan W. Thomsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bose-Einstein condensation; optical lattice; quantum phase transition; experiment; theory; Condensed matter physics; Kondenserade materiens fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis includes both experimental and theoretical investigations, presented in a series of eight papers. The experimental part ranges from the construction procedures of an apparatus for Bose-Einstein condensates, to full scale experiments using three different set-ups for ultracold atoms in optical lattices. 3. 3. Slow and stopped light by light-matter coherence control

    Author : Jonas Tidström; Lars Thylén; Mauritz Andersson; Jesper Mørk; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; slow light; stored light; stopped light; light-matter coherence; electromagnetically induced transparency; rubidium atoms; Physics; Fysik; Photonics; Fotonik;

    Abstract : In this thesis we study light-matter coherence phenomena related to the interaction of a coherent laser field and the so-called Λ-system, a three-level quantum system (e.g., an atom). We observe electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), slow and stored light in hot rubidium vapor. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mechanisms of alloxan diabetogenicity

    Author : Kjell Grankvist; Inge-Bert Täljedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alloxan; catalase; experimental diabetes; free radicals; islets of Langerhans; rubidium accumulation; superoxide dismutase; Trypan Blue;

    Abstract : Suspensions of pancreatic islet cells from ob/ob-mice were incubated with Trypan Blue. Microscope photometry showed that apparently viable cells excluded the dye completely, whereas the nuclei of non-viable cells accumulated Trypan Blue by a saturable process. READ MORE
