1. Synthesis and asymmetric transformations of diols by enzyme- and ruthenium catalysis
Abstract : The major part of this thesis describes the synthesis of aliphatic secondary diols and the development of lipase- and ruthenium-catalyzed asymmetric transformations of these diols. Several acyclic 1,4-diols and 1,5-diols were synthesized, and by combining a lipase-catalyzed asymmetric transformation with a ruthenium-catalyzed epimerization, enantiomerically- and diastereomerically enriched diacetates were obtained. 2. Mechanistic Studies on Ruthenium-Catalyzed Hydrogen Transfer Reactions
Abstract : Mechanistic studies on three different ruthenium-based catalysts have been performed. The catalysts have in common that they have been employed in hydrogen transfer reactions involving alcohols and ketones, amines and imines or both. READ MORE

3. Ruthenium-catalyzed C-H Functionalization of (Hetero)arenes
Abstract : This thesis concerned about the Ru-catalyzed C-H functionalizations on the synthesis of 2-arylindole unit, silylation of heteroarenes and preparation of aryne precursor. In the first project, we developed the Ru-catalyzed C2-H arylation of N-(2-pyrimidyl) indoles and pyrroles with nucleophilic arylboronic acids under oxidative conditions. 4. Ruthenium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation
Abstract : This thesis covers the development of two new methods for the asymmetric reduction of ketones and ketone intermediates. The protocols developed are based on the use of a ruthenium pseudo-dipeptide catalyst that previously has been shown to be efficient and selective in the asymmetric reduction of carbonyl compounds. 5. Ruthenium-catalyzed redox reactions and lipase-catalyzed asymmetric transformations of alcohols
Abstract : The major part of this thesis describes the synthesis of enantiopure alcohols and diols by combining ruthenium-catalyzed redox reactions that lead to racemization or epimerization and lipase-catalyzed asymmetric trans-formations in one-pot.A mechanistic study of the unexpected facile formation of meso-diacetate products found in enzyme-catalyzed acetylations of alkanediols with Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) was first performed.
