  1. 1. Oscillatory Ca2+ signaling in glucose-stimulated murine pancreatic β-cells : Modulation by amino acids, glucagon, caffeine and ryanodine

    Author : Meftun Ahmed; Per Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; pancreatic β-cells; islets of Langerhans; glucose; Ca2 oscillations; Ca2 transients; potassium; ryanodine; caffeine; glucagon; cAMP; inositol 1; 4; 5-trisphosphate; fura-2; glycine; alanine; arginine; Ca2 channels; rats; lean mice; ob ob mice; leptin; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Oscillations in cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) is the key signal in glucose-stimulated β-cells governing pulsatile insulin release. The glucose response of mouse β-cells is often manifested as slow oscillations and rapid transients of [Ca2+] i. READ MORE

  2. 2. Anaesthesia and Genetics of the Ryanodine 1 Receptor

    Author : Marcus Ewert Broman; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General Anaesthesia; Ryanodine 1 Receptor; Malignant Hyperthermia; Genetics;

    Abstract : The only validated method to characterize the phenotype and to reach a definitive diagnosis of Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptibility (MHS; OMIM *145600), a pharmacogenetic disease linked to the Ryanodine 1 receptor gene (RYR1; OMIM *180901), is an invasive muscle contraction test requiring a muscle biopsy, according to the European (IVCT) protocol or to the North American (CHCT) protocol. The series of scientific papers in this thesis tries to reach as far as possible in diagnosing MHS from peripheral venous blood samples collected at the patients’ local primary care provider and sent to the laboratory over significant transportation time and distance. 3. 3. Dynamics of Ca2 handling in vascular smooth muscle

    Author : Karl Dreja; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; smooth muscle; phenotypic modulation; caveolae; Physiology; confocal microscopy; calcium; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Intracellular Ca2+ is a key regulator of vascular contractility, and thereby of blood perfusion and pressure. Ca2+ signals are essential also for cell migration, proliferation and regulation of numerous enzymes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease gene mutation on cell signaling

    Author : Nodi Dehvari; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the major neurodegenerative disorders affecting the elderly. The discovery of genes causing familial forms of these disorders has contributed enormously towards our understanding of underlying pathogenic mechanisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cell coupling and exocytosis measured in intact mouse pancreatic islets Control of {delta}-cell secretion

    Author : Quan Zhang; Islet cell physiology; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Patch-clamp and capacitance measurements were applied to α-, β- and δ-cells in intact mouse pancreatic islets. The maximum rate of β-cell exocytosis during a depolarization to 0 mV was 14 granules/s, ... READ MORE
