11. Cardiorespiratory function of euryhaline teleosts - Regulatory mechanisms, effects of warming and costs of osmoregulation
Abstract : Teleost fishes have colonized almost every aquatic habitat on earth and exhibit adaptations that allow them to thrive in environments with very diverse physico-chemical properties. One fundamental environmental variable in aquatic ecosystems is salinity, as most fish species are only able to tolerate a narrow range of salinities. READ MORE

12. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria
Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 13. Tracing pathways in the ocean circulation : A temperature and salinity perspective
Abstract : The ocean circulation plays an essential role in our climate system. It redistributes heat, salt, carbon and other tracers across the globe, making the climate of Earth more moderate. This thesis targets density differences that are driving the ocean circulation. These differences are caused by changes in temperature and salinity. READ MORE

14. Ocean Climate Variability over Recent Centuries Explored by Modelling the Baltic Sea
Abstract : Natural variability and anthropogenic factors both contribute to changes in the ocean climate of the Baltic Sea. Observations over the past century indicate that changes in environmental settings and ocean climate have taken place, attracting considerable media attention and building public awareness of climate and environmental issues related to the Baltic Sea. 15. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities
Abstract : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters.
