  1. 1. Evolution and Ecology of AhR genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    Author : Maria Hansson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AhR genes; Atlantic salmon; gene evolution; phylogenetics; environmental pollutants; Baltic Sea; ecotoxicology; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In vertebrates, studies of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) have been of particular interest due to its direct involvement in the toxic effects exerted by several environmental pollutants, such as PCB and dioxin. After binding to the toxic molecule, this receptor initiates transcription of several genes that are part of the biotransformation battery but most notably the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, which results in an excessive release of oxidative enzymes and free radicals. 2. 2. Genetic Variation in Mhc Class II B in Atlantic Salmon: Evolutionary and Ecological Perspectives

    Author : Åsa Langefors; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombination; genetic variation; Mhc class II B; Atlantic salmon; evolution; population genetics; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : The Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) genes are crucial for the recognition of self and non-self peptides by the immune defence system. They are extremely variable in most studied vertebrate species. I have studied the extent and the importance of Mhc variation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), mainly from the Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  3. 3. MHC and genomic diversity in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    Author : Jakob Lohm; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Djurekologi; cytogenetik; Genetik; cytogenetics; Genetics; nucleotide diversity; isolation-by-distance; DGGE; AFLP; furunculosis; disease resistance; Arctic charr; brown trout; Atlantic salmon; population genetics; genetic variation; Mhc class IIB; Animal ecology;

    Abstract : In this thesis I present studies concerning genomic diversity and genetic heterogeneity as well as the evolution and maintenance of genetic variation at a specific immune defence gene in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, L.). READ MORE

  4. 4. On urbanisation and birds : Insights from a molecular and physiological perspective

    Author : Pablo Salmon; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : Air Pollution; Antioxidants; Birds; great tit Parus major; Local adaptation; Nitrogen oxides; Oxidative stress; Parallel evolution; Survival; Telomere dynamics; Telomeres; Urbanisation;

    Abstract : Urbanisation of natural habitats is rapidly intensifying and poses a potential global threat for wildlife. Thus, it is important to explore its impact on wildlife in order to understand the present and future threats and how resilient organisms are to them. READ MORE

  5. 5. The estrogen receptor in fish and effects of synthetic estrogens in the environment - Ecological and evolutionary perspectives and societal awareness

    Author : Lina Nikoleris; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; the estrogen receptor; salmon evolution and ecology; contraceptives; information gaps; synthetic hormones; EE2; Atlantic salmon Salmo salar ; brown trout Salmo trutta ; roach Rutilus rutilus ;

    Abstract : Synthetic hormones are a group of pharmaceuticals used for various human and animal treatments. However, consumption and disposal of these substances have also given rise to negative effects and environmental problems for organisms in the wild which is why these substances have been classified as estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
