  1. 16. Nitrates and Left Ventricular Dysfunction

    Author : Erik Tingberg; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lipid peroxidation; malondialdehyde; peptide; brain natriuretic peptide; left ventricular dysfunction; nitrates; acute myocardial infarction; heart failure; atrial natriuretic; diuretics; echocardiography; haemodynamic measurements; neurohumoral activation; diastolic dysfunction; Cardiovascular system; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Kardiovaskulära systemet; oxidative stress; isoprostanes;

    Abstract : Use of beta-blockers and inhibitors of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) is established practice in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). Clinical studies also suggest beneficial long-term effects of nitrates in CHF. READ MORE

  2. 17. Genetically Engineered Plants: Improved stress tolerance, growth and facilitated protein purification

    Author : Gösta Lilius; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glycine betaine; gene; freezing; flooding; drought; dicoteledones; desiccation; compatible solutes; cold; choline dehydrogenase; chill; CDH; betaine; betA; alkaloids anoxia; affinity purification; affinity tags; handles; hemoglobin; hypoxia; low temperatu; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Heterologous genes were expressed in plants in which the overall goal was to increase the value of the final crop. Various aspects were explored and evaluated, such as improving the stress tolerance, enhancing the availability of oxygen in growing cells and producing rare proteins with increased degrees of purity. 3. 18. Method development for analysis of 8-oxodG as a biomarker for oxidative stress

    Author : Tim Hofer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Oxidative damage to DNA gives oxidation of DNA bases and strand breaks that can cause mutations leading to cancer. Various forms of agents are capable of oxidising DNA in vivo including peroxides, singlet oxygen and UV- or gamma-irradiation. Oxidation of DNA bases occurs mainly at dG, giving stable DNA adducts such as 8-oxodG and FapydG. READ MORE

  4. 19. Mechanisms of plant root xylem developmental plasticity in response to water deficiency and salt

    Author : Frauke Augstein; Annelie Carlsbecker; Eva Sundberg; Charles Melnyk; Malcolm Bennett; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ABA; developmental plasticity; GA; HD-ZIP III; VND; xylem; Biologi med inriktning mot fysiologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Physiological Botany;

    Abstract : Plants may be exposed to a variety of different environmental conditions including water deficiency and salt, both affecting the uptake of water into the plant. Water is taken up from the soil by the roots and distributed throughout the plant via the water conducting tissue, the xylem. READ MORE

  5. 20. Influence of Ageing on Material Properties at Interfaces in Composite Insulators

    Author : Johan Andersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; composite insulators; ageing; silicone rubber; salt fog test; Outdoor insulation; inclined plane test; interfaces;

    Abstract : High quality of internal interfaces in composite insulators for high voltage applications is necessary for securing durability of their functionality. Weak macroscopic interfaces between the glass fibre reinforced (FRP) epoxy core and the silicone rubber (SIR) housing, such as spots with reduced bonding or a loss of the adhesion as well as presence of foreign contaminants, can appear to have an accelerating effect on the evolution of ageing processes, though it may take years before the first signs of processes endangering the insulator function appear.
