  1. 1. Dynamical aspects of coherent eddies in the North Atlantic Ocean : Insights from Satellite Observations

    Author : Arunraj Kondetharayil Soman; Léon Chafik; Johan Nilsson; Caroline Katsman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eddy detection and tracking; Ocean heat content; Satellite altimetry; Lagrangian Trajectories; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : Oceanic mesoscale eddies, often referred to as the “weather of the ocean”, have horizontal scales of O(10) − O(102) kilometers and timescales spanning days to months. These structures comprise a complex system of coherent eddies (meaning they retain their shape and structure over time and space), filaments, and spirals that influence the transport of heat, salt, and nutrients in the ocean. 2. 2. Multi-satellite views on mesospheric microphysics and dynamics

    Author : Lina Broman; Jörg Gumbel; Susanne Benze; Scott Bailey; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polar mesospheric clouds; satellite tomography; remote sensing; cloud microphysics; wave dynamics; mesosphere; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Atmospheric gravity waves of different scales and origins strongly modulate the wind field and temperature structure of the higher parts of the atmosphere. Direct and continuous measurements of these processes are particularly complicated in the mesosphere at about 50 to 100 km height due to the remote location of this region. READ MORE

  3. 3. Earth satellites and air and ground-based activities

    Author : Ulf Ekblad; KTH; []

    Abstract : This thesis, Earth satellites and detection of air andground based activities by Ulf Ekblad of the Physics departmentat the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), addresses theproblem of detecting military activities in imagery. Examplesof various techniques are presented. READ MORE

  4. 4. Study on the Earth’s Surface Mass Variations using Satellite Gravimetry Observations

    Author : Hadi Amin; Mohammad Bagherbandi; Lars Sjöberg; Faramarz Nilfouroushan; Martin Horwath; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; geodetic reference system; geoid potential; global vertical datum; climate change; global warming; mass change; ice melting; sea-level change; remote sensing; satellite gravimetry; geodetiska referenssystem; geopotential; globala vertikala datum; klimatförändring; global uppvärmning; massförändring; issmältning; havsnivåförändring; fjärranalys; satellitgravimetri;

    Abstract : Our complex planet is continuously undergoing temporal and spatial changes. In this context, ongoing processes in the Earth subsystems (geosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere) cause changes in the gravity field of the Earth across a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. 5. 5. Building a coherent hydro-climatic modelling framework for the data limited Kilombero Valley of Tanzania

    Author : Alexander Koutsouris; Steve W. Lyon; Jan Seibert; Mekonnen Gebremichael; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrology; Precipitation; Recession analysis; End - member mixing analysis; EMMA; GLUE; HBV; down scaling; Quantile mapping; CFSR; CMORPH; CRU; GPCC; ERA - i; MERRA; TRMM; UDEL; Satellite; Reanalysis; Kilombero; Tanzania; Eastern Africa; Africa; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : This thesis explores key aspects for synthesizing data across spatiotemporal scales relevant for water resources management in an Eastern Africa context. Specifically, the potential of large scale global precipitation datasets (GPDs) in data limited regions to overcome spatial and temporal data gaps is considered. READ MORE
