1. Recovery of Scandium using Antisolvent Crystallization in the Valorization of Scandium-containing Waste Streams
Abstract : Scandium is widely dispersed in the earth’s crust and is rarely concentrated in ores, and a viable option to guarantee a secure supply of scandium is to recover the metal from waste streams of other mining and metallurgical facilities. The valorization of such streams to recover metals of value is a prerequisite to alleviate the global shortages of scandium and other rare earth elements. READ MORE

2. Scandium Nitride Thin Films for Thermoelectrics
Abstract : Thermoelectric devices are one of the promising energy harvesting technologies, since they can convert heat (i.e. a temperature gradient) to electricity. This result leads us to use them to harvest waste heat from heat engines or in power plants to generate usable electricity. READ MORE

3. Synthesis of Thin Piezoelectric AlN Films in View of Sensors and Telecom Applications
Abstract : The requirements of the consumer market on high frequency devices have been more and more demanding over the last decades. Thus, a continuing enhancement of the devices’ performance is required in order to meet these demands. In a macro view, changing the design of the device can result in an improvement of its performance. READ MORE

4. Clues to galaxy evolution from spectroscopic observations of Galactic centre stars
Abstract : In this work we present results from spectroscopic observations of Galactic centre stars. High resolution stellar spectroscopy can be used to determine accurate stellar metallicities and abundances. Observing stars in the Galactic centre is challenging due to extreme extinction. READ MORE

5. Structure of solvated matal ions
Abstract : The structure of the solvated group 3 ions scandium(III),yttrium(III) and lanthanum(III), has been determined in aqueoussolution and in some oxygen donor solvents, and compared withthe hydrated group 13 ions gallium(III) and indium(III). Acombination of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), largeangle X-ray scattering (LAXS), crystallography and vibrationspectroscopy has been used for the structure studies of thehydrated ions and their dimethylsulfoxide andN,N´-dimethylpropylene urea solvates in solution and inthe solid state.
