  3. 3. Fabrication and Characterization of Aluminum Single Electron Transistors for Scanning Probes

    Author : Henrik Brenning; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radio frequency single electron transistor; scanning probe; charging energy; nano fabrication; noise; scanning SET; SET; cantilever; AFM; RC-product; micro mechanics;

    Abstract : The main objective of the work presented in this thesis was to fabricatescanning single electron transistor probes that operate at pumped liquid heliumtemperatures. This required single electron transistors (SETs) with low resistance (R_) and relatively high charging energy (E_C), and the technology tointegrate SETs onto probes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Theoretical modeling of scanning tunneling microscopy

    Author : Alexander Gustafsson; Magnus Paulsson; Jorge Iribas Cerdá; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scanning tunneling microscopy; Computational models; Quantum tunneling; Green s functions; Density functional theory; Condensed Matter Physics; Kondenserade materians fysik;

    Abstract : The main body of this thesis describes how to calculate scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images from first-principles methods. The theory is based on localized orbital density functional theory (DFT), whose limitations for large-vacuum STM models are resolved by propagating localized-basis wave functions close to the surface into the vacuum region in real space.
