  1. 1. Drawing Science : Visual Content Formation in Young Students’ Multimodal Science Compositions

    Author : Elin Westlund; Charlotte Engblom; Caroline Liberg; Anna-Malin Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; content representation; early school years; science education; multimodal text-making; visual literacy; Curriculum Studies; Didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis explores visual formation of science content in young students’ multimodal text-image compositions. In doing so, it also contributes a metalanguage for visual meaning-making about science content in the early school years. READ MORE

  2. 2. Generative comics - A computational approach to creating comics material

    Author : Malik Nairat; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; comics; multi-agent systems; interactive evolution; generative storytelling; digital comics;

    Abstract : Digital storytelling can be employed as a tool that incorporates human creativity with technology. It synthesizes multimedia based elements to create engaging stories and compelling narratives. To this end, this research presents an approach that can be used as an assistant tool for comics artists. READ MORE

  3. 3. Representation Learning and Information Fusion : Applications in Biomedical Image Processing

    Author : Elisabeth Wetzer; Nataša Sladoje; Fred Hamprecht; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Representation Learning; Texture Descriptors; Equivariant Neural Networks; Contrastive Learning; Image Classification; Image Registration; Image Retrieval; Digital Pathology; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : In recent years Machine Learning and in particular Deep Learning have excelled in object recognition and classification tasks in computer vision. As these methods extract features from the data itself by learning features that are relevant for a particular task, a key aspect of this remarkable success is the amount of data on which these methods train. 4. 4. Dexterous Grasping : Representation and Optimization

    Author : Kaiyu Hang; Nancy Pollard; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Dexterous Grasping; Hierarchical Fingertip Space; Grasp Planning; Grasp Adaptation; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Abstract : Many robot object interactions require that an object is firmly held, and that the grasp remains stable during the whole manipulation process. Based on grasp wrench space, this thesis address the problems of measuring the grasp sensitivity against friction changes, planning contacts and hand configurations on mesh and point cloud representations of arbitrary objects, planning adaptable grasps and finger gaiting for keeping a grasp stable under various external disturbances, as well as learning of grasping manifolds for more accurate reachability and inverse kinematics computation for multifingered grasping.     Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; cultural history of science; science and metaphor; science and visual representation; family trees; tree diagrams; information management; classification; natural history; philology; music theory; genealogy; evolution; secularisation; Enlightenment; French Revolution; Augustin Augier 1758–1825 ; Félix Gallet 1773–c. 1840 47 ; Henri Montan Berton 1767–1844 .; History of Sciences and Ideas; Idé- och lärdomshistoria;

    Abstract : This study investigates early employments of family trees in the modern sciences, in order to historicise their iconic status and now established uses, notably in evolutionary biology and linguistics. Moving beyond disciplinary accounts to consider the wider cultural background, it examines how early uses within the sciences transformed family trees as a format of visual representation, as well as the meanings invested in them.
