  1. 1. Spaceborne SAR in Sea Ice Monitoring: Algorithm Development and Validation for the Baltic Sea

    Author : Anders Berg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; synthetic aperture radar; ice drift; sea ice; ice type; ice concentration;

    Abstract : The usefulness of new spaceborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) sensors at L-, C-, and X-band for operational sea ice monitoring in the Baltic Sea has been evaluated. It is concluded that the information content in C-band and X-band data is largely equivalent, although larger spatial coverage is an advantage of the current C-band satellites. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar for Sea Ice Observations, Concentration and Dynamics

    Author : Anders Berg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; synthetic aperture radar; interferometry; satellite; sea ice dynamics; sea ice monitoring; sea ice concentration;

    Abstract : Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is the primary choice for sea ice monitoring due to its all-weather, day-and-night capability and regular delivery of high resolution images. This thesis presents methods for estimation of sea ice concentration and drift, a multi-sensor study of Baltic Sea ice radar signatures and an interferometric study of landfast sea ice. READ MORE

  3. 3. Oceanographic studies of the Baltic Sea with emphasis on sea ice and mixing processes

    Author : Christian Nohr; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; Water and Heat budgets; Deep-water mixing; Internal Wavedrag; Dynamical Sea Ice production; Sea Ice dynamics;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises of model estimates of the water and heat budgets, re-estimating of the budget of deep-water mixing energy, model studies of generation mechanisms for internal waves, sea ice dynamermics and finally sea ice monitoring. Common site for all the studies are the Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nonlinear Numerical Simulations of Interactions Between Ice Rubble and Structure

    Author : Aniket Patil; Andrzej Cwirzen; Björnar Sand; Lennart Fransson; Knut Vilhelm Høyland; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ice mechanics; ice rubble; sea ice ridges; punch through test; shear box test; friction coefficient; cohesive element method; smoothed particle hydrodynamics; continuous surface cap model; numerical modelling; Byggkonstruktion; Structural Engineering;

    Abstract : This research is focused on three distinct but interconnecting topics:1) investigation of physical and mechanical properties of ice rubble, 2) material modelling of ice rubble, 3) numerical simulation of the interaction between ice rubble structure interaction. large scatter in the values of physical and mechanical properties of ice rubble can be seen in the literature due to non-standardised methods. 5. 5. Weichselian glaciations in the middle Notec River region, northwest Poland

    Author : Gert Pettersson; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quaternary Geology; Kvartärgeologi; Geology; Geologi; Vistulian; Weichselian; Lithostratigraphy; Poland; Chodziez; Clast lithology; Clast fabrics; Deglaciation; Ice stream; Sedimentology; Sedimentologi; geomorphology; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology;

    Abstract : This thesis presents results of studies on the ice flow pattern and ice movement mechanism during the Weichselian glaciations in the middle Notec River area, NW Poland. A new lithostratigraphy of the study area has been established, based on correlation of stratigraphical position, clast lithology, fabrics and grain size composition of till units. READ MORE
