  1. 1. Ridged sea ice modelling in climate applications

    Author : Sebastian Mårtensson; Markus Meier; Kristofer Döös; Peter A. Lundberg; Frank Kauker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic ocean; Baltic Sea; sea ice; ice dynamics; numerical modelling; climate; ice deformation; ice compression; physical and biogeochemical interactions; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : This work aims to increase our understanding of the nature of large scale features of sea ice from a dynamics point of view.Sea ice plays an important part in the exchange of heat and humidity between sea and air and thus is an important component of the climate system. READ MORE

  2. 2. Light conditions in seasonally ice-covered waters : within the Baltic Sea region

    Author : Elina Kari; Susanne Kratzer; Matti Leppäranta; Monika Winder; Tiit Kutser; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seasonal sea ice; Fast ice; Drift ice; Phytoplankton spring bloom; Under-ice plume; Turbidity; Suspended particulate matter; Chlorophyll; Coloured dissolved organic matter; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Seasonal ice cover is a major driver of seasonality in aquatic ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. Ice cover influences the underwater light conditions directly by limiting the light transfer and indirectly by modifying the mixing and circulation under the ice. READ MORE

  3. 3. Spaceborne SAR in Sea Ice Monitoring: Algorithm Development and Validation for the Baltic Sea

    Author : Anders Berg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; synthetic aperture radar; ice drift; sea ice; ice type; ice concentration;

    Abstract : The usefulness of new spaceborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) sensors at L-, C-, and X-band for operational sea ice monitoring in the Baltic Sea has been evaluated. It is concluded that the information content in C-band and X-band data is largely equivalent, although larger spatial coverage is an advantage of the current C-band satellites. READ MORE

  4. 4. Detection and classification of sea ice from spaceborne multi-frequency synthetic aperture radar imagery and radar altimetry

    Author : Wiebke Aldenhoff; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Beaufort Sea; sea ice classification; sea ice; sea ice concentration; Fram Strait; SAR imaging; radar altimetry;

    Abstract : The sea ice cover in the Arctic is undergoing drastic changes. Since the start of satellite observations by microwave remote sensing in the late 1970's, the maximum summer sea ice extent has been decreasing and thereby causing a generally thinner and younger sea ice cover. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sea Ice Concentration Estimation and Ice Type Classification from Dual-Frequency Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar

    Author : Wiebke Aldenhoff; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sea ice concentration; sea ice; SAR imaging; sea ice classification; Fram Strait;

    Abstract : The sea ice cover in the Arctic has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. The perennial sea ice extent is decreasing by 12.2 % per decade while annual mean sea ice thickness has decreased by more than 2 m for the central Arctic Basin from 1975 to 2012. READ MORE
