  1. 1. Influence of Sea Surface Temperature on Rainfall and Runof in Northeastern South America: Analysis and Modeling

    Author : Cintia Bertacchi Uvo; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kartografi; marklära; geomorfologi; Fysisk geografi; climatology; pedology; cartography; Physical geography; geomorphology; sea surface temperature; rainfall-runoff; Amazonia; precipitation; Northeast Brazil; klimatologi; Geophysics; physical oceanography; meteorology; Geofysik; fysisk oceanografi; meteorologi; Hydrogeology; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; teknisk geografi;

    Abstract : This work represents an amalgam of a group of studies with the purpose of understanding the influence of the Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature on precipitation and river discharge in Northeastern South America. Sea surface temperature is a good representative of phenomena such as ENSO that, in turn, cause worldwide climate variability. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ocean Climate Variability over Recent Centuries Explored by Modelling the Baltic Sea

    Author : Daniel Hansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; ocean climate; modelling; reconsstruction; water temperature; sea ice; river runoff; salinity; oxygen concentration; long-term;

    Abstract : Natural variability and anthropogenic factors both contribute to changes in the ocean climate of the Baltic Sea. Observations over the past century indicate that changes in environmental settings and ocean climate have taken place, attracting considerable media attention and building public awareness of climate and environmental issues related to the Baltic Sea. 3. 3. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nina Svensson; Erik Sahlée; Hans Bergström; Anna Rutgersson; Søren Larsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary layer; Baltic Sea; stable conditions; low-level jet; sea breeze; boundary layer rolls; mesoscale effects; WRF; LIDAR;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 4. 4. Carbon Dynamics in Northern Marginal Seas

    Author : Sofia Hjalmarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dissolved inorganic carbon; total alkalinity; continental shelf pump; marginal seas; Baltic Sea; Skagerrak; Laptev Sea; East Siberian Sea; Chukchi Sea;

    Abstract : The marginal seas have, despite their relatively small area, an important role in the global carbon cycle. They are largely influenced by carbon and nutrient fluxes from land and a large part of the biological production occurs in the marginal seas. READ MORE

  5. 5. Toward Anti-icing and De-icing Surfaces : Effects of Surface Topography and Temperature

    Author : Golrokh Heydari; Per Claesson; Eric Tyrode; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; anti-icing; topography; supercooled water; wetting hysteresis; superhydrophobic; contact angle; nucleation; freezing delay; de-icing; ice adhesion; hydration water; liquid-like layer; smooth; lubrication; anti-is; topografi; underkylt vatten; vätningshysteres; superhydrofob; kontaktvinkel; kärnbildning; avisning; isadhesion; hydrerat vatten; vätskeliknande skikt; smörjning; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Icing severely affects society, especially in the Nordic countries. Iceaccumulation can result in critical performance problems and safetyconcerns for instance in road, air and sea transportation, transmissionlines, marine and offshore structures, wind turbines and heat exchangers.
