  1. 1. Hydrological and sediment yield modelling in Lake Tana Basin, Blue Nile Ethiopia

    Author : Shimelis Gebriye Setegn; Bijan Dargahi; Anders Wörman; C. Green Rossi; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SWAT; Lake Tana; Blue Nile; hydrological modelling; watershed modelling; MCE; SUFI-2; GLUE; ParaSol; streamflows; sediment yield; erosion; water balance; model calibration; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : Land and water resources degradation are the major problems on the Ethiopian highlands. Poor land use practices and improper management systems have played a significant role in causing high soil erosion rates, sediment transport and loss of agricultural nutrients. So far limited meas-ures have been taken to combat the problems. READ MORE

  2. 2. Waterborne sediment and pollutant transport into lakes and accumulation in lake sediments

    Author : Gull Olli; Gia Destouni; Ingmar Renberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Catchment; environmental projects; erosion; eutrophication; phosphorous transport and retention; soil transport; sediment accumulation; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The general objective of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of the transport of sediments and pollutants from catchments to downstream water recipient systems and their accumulation in these systems, such as lakes and lake sediments. One part of the thesis studies the importance of drainage reach morphology and water flow for the phosphorous (P) transport and retention in the reaches, and the main controlling processes of the P retention in the reach sediments. 3. 3. Sediment sources and transport pathways, Lithuanian coastal zone

    Author : Milda Kairytè; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment; grain size; mineralogy; Lithuania; coastal zone; provenance; geology;

    Abstract : This thesis presents an investigation of recent sediments of the Lithuanian coastal zone, SE Baltic Sea. The main focus is upon the detailed documentation of grain size and mineralogy and the development of analytical methods using these essential and most common sediment parameters. READ MORE

  4. 4. Swash Processes and Dune Erosion: Emphasis on Vessel-Generated Waves

    Author : Li Erikson; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; Civil engineering; hydraulic engineering; geomorfologi; Fysisk geografi; climatology; cartography; pedology; geomorphology; Naturvetenskap; Physical geography; Natural science; swash; erosion; vessel-generated waves; dunes; offshore technology; soil mechanics; Väg- och vattenbyggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : In navigable waterways, owing to the relatively short fetches for wind wave generation, the free waves generated by moving vessels often produce the dominant wave action with respect to erosion of the shore. In response to the fairly recent introduction of high-speed ferries, combined with a planned expansion within the passenger- and car-carrying ship market, the need to model and predict coastline changes as a result of exposure to vessel-generated waves has become a topic of increased research. 5. 5. Sediment transport from source to sink in the Lake Baikal basin : Impacts of hydroclimatic change and mining

    Author : Jan Pietroń; Jerker Jarsjö; Enrica Viparelli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment transport; human impact; hydroclimatic change; surface mining; metal-enriched sediment; Lake Baikal; the Selenga River; the Selenga Delta; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Different magnitude, intensity and timing of precipitation can impact runoff, hillslope erosion and transport of sediment along river channels.  Human activities, such as dam construction and surface mining can also considerably influence transport of sediment and sediment-bound contaminants.
