  1. 11. Floodplain remediation in agricultural streams : improved process understanding for reduced eutrophication

    Author : Lukas Hallberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Anthropogenically modified headwater streams are key pathways for high nutrient and sediment loads from agriculture, sustaining eutrophication and poor water quality in downstream aquatic ecosystems. To address this challenge, stream mitigation strategies are required that complement in-field measures, to intercept internal pollutant loading in streams. READ MORE

  2. 12. Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons; an interdisciplinary study of degradation and distribution in complex environments

    Author : Sofia Åkesson; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Groundwater; Groundwater chemistry; Contamination; Chlorinated solvents; In situ remediation; Biodegradation; PCR; DCIP; CSIA;

    Abstract : In this thesis degradation of chlorinated solvents, e.g., tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene [PCE]), has been examined, both natural occurring degradation and in situ remediation strategies. READ MORE

  3. 13. Microbial diversity in Baltic Sea sediments

    Author : Anna Edlund; Janet K. Jansson; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Havsbottnen; Mikroorganismer; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on microbial community structures and their functions in Baltic Sea sediments. First we investigated the distribution of archaea and bacteria in Baltic Sea sediments along a eutrophication gradient. READ MORE

  4. 14. On benthic fluxes of phosphorus in the Baltic Sea proper – drivers and estimates

    Author : Nils Ekeroth; Sven Blomqvist; Per Hall; Volker Brüchert; Brita Sundelin; Jonas Gunnarsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This Thesis focuses on the exchange of phosphorus (P) across the sediment–water interface in the Baltic Sea proper, with particular attention to the influence of bioturbating macrofauna and benthic redox conditions. Benthic P fluxes have major influence on P availability in the water column, which in turn regulates growth conditions for dinitrogen fixating cyanobacteria in the Baltic proper. READ MORE

  5. 15. The Lagrangian Stochastic Advective-Reactive Approach to Modeling Solute Transport in Hydrological Systems

    Author : Archana Gupta; KTH; []
    Keywords : solute transport; groundwater transport; unsaturated zone; stream hydrology; stream networks; stochastic processes; mass transfer kinetics; preferential flow; temporal moments; catchment hydrology; Lagrangian transport model;

    Abstract : The Lagrangian stochastic advective-reactive modelingapproach has been used for analyzing transport of bothnonreactive and reactive solutes in different hydrologicalsystems (structured soil, groundwater, mining waste rockdeposits and surface waters including single stream and networkof streams) and at different spatio-temporal scales (rangingfrom laboratory column-scale to catchment-scale). Further, afirst step has been taken to extending the Lagrangianstochastic advective-reactive modeling methodology to integratethe soil-groundwater-stream transport through a catchment. READ MORE
