  1. 21. Constraining the Southern Part of the Greenland Ice Sheet since the Last Glacial Maximum from Relative Sea-Level Changes, Cosmogenic Dates and Glacial-Isostatic Adjustment Models

    Author : Charlotte Sparrenbom; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; physical oceanography; geokemi; Sedimentology; Sedimentologi; Geophysics; meteorology; mineralogi; geochemistry; mineralogy; Petrology; Geologi; fysisk geografi; physical geography; Geology; neo-glacial; in-situ cosmigenic nuclide; XRF-scanning; glacial-isostatic adjustment models; glacial history; sea-level changes; Greenland; isolation basins; fysisk oceanografi; Petrologi; meteorologi; Geofysik;

    Abstract : New results are presented from the investigation of relative sea-level changes in the Nanortalik and Qaqortoq-Narsarsuaq areas in SW Greenland from c. 11 000 cal. years BP to the present. READ MORE

  2. 22. An inductive approach to the modeling of lake water quality in dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes

    Author : Tomas K. E. Thierfelder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : To explore the interaction between elements of the watershed and lake water quality, a database large enough to approximate the generic population of dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes is assembled and analyzed with multivariate statistical methods in an inductive top-down approach. Utilizing the analytical capabilities of geographical information systems, the spatially distributed characteristics of land cover, soil and bedrock elements are identified and parameterized with respect to element morphology and hydrology. 3. 23. Geochemical and sedimentary signatures of Phanerozoic events

    Author : Jane Wigforss-Lange; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; geokemi; Sedimentology; Petrology; mineralogy; geochemistry; Petrologi; mineralogi; Carbon and oxygen isotopes; Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary; K-T boundary; Late Silurian; Events; Trace elements; Sedimentologi;

    Abstract : Geological and biological catastrophic events have occurred repeatedly in the Earth's history, leaving traces in the global stratigraphical record in the form of sedimentary features, geochemical anomalies and biotic turnovers. This thesis focuses on the sedimentological and geochemical signatures of several key events in the Phanerozoic stratigraphical record, and aims to interpret the different signals and the causal mechanisms behind each of these events. 4. 24. Regulation of carbon dioxide emission from Swedish boreal lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Grete Algesten; Mats Jansson; Pirkko Kortelainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; lakes; boreal; Gulf of bothnia; CO2; NEE; DOC; mineralization; sediment; catchment; net heterotrophy; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The global carbon cycle is subject to intense research, where sources and sinks for greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide in particular, are estimated for various systems and biomes. Lakes have previously been neglected in carbon balance estimations, but have recently been recognized to be significant net sources of CO2. READ MORE

  5. 25. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden

    Author : Christian Bigler; Ingemar Renberg; Roland Hall; N. John Anderson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; diatoms; Holocene; paleolimnology; climate change; lake sediments; transfer functions; quantitative environmental reconstructions; northern Sweden; Abisko; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages.
