1. Functional Diversification among MADS-Box Genes and the Evolution of Conifer Seed Cone Development
Abstract : MADS-box genes are important regulators of reproductive development in seed plants, including both flowering plants and conifers. In this thesis the evolution of the AGAMOUS subfamily of MADS-box genes, and what the ancestral function of this group of genes might have been in the early seed plants about 300 million years ago, was addressed by the discovery of two novel conifer genes, both basal to all previously known AGAMOUS subfamily genes. 2. Population management of cone and seed insects in spruce seed orchards
Abstract : Seed orchards have been established in order to produce high quality seeds for reforestation and forestation. However, seed production in spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seed orchards is severely hampered by cone- and seed-feeding insects. READ MORE

3. Game of crops : genetic composition and adaptation of seed orchard crops
Abstract : Orchard populations are artificial and intensively managed populations of elite, best-performing trees that are established for mass production of genetically improved seeds. Seed orchards connect cycles of selection, breeding, and testing of plus-trees with the deployment of the improved seeds at the operational plantations. READ MORE

4. Evolution of genetic mechanisms regulating reproductive development in plants : Characterisation of MADS-box genes active during cone development in Norway spruce
Abstract : The reproductive organs of conifers and angiosperms differ in morphology in several fundamental respects. The conifer Norway spruce (Picea abies) form pollen and seed cones from separate meristems whereas angiosperms bear bipartite flowers with sepals and petals surrounding two inner whorls of stamens and carpels. 5. MADS-Box Gene Phylogeny and the Evolution of Plant Form : Characterisation of a Family of Regulators of Reproductive Development from the Conifer Norway Spruce, Picea abies
Abstract : The evolutionary relationships between the angiosperm floral organs and the reproductive organs of other seed plants is not known. Flower organ development requires transcription factors encoded by the MADS-box genes. READ MORE
