  1. 1. On the Ecology and Evolution of seed and Bud Dormancy

    Author : Patric Nilsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bet-hedging; overcompensation; herbivory; plant compensatory growth; bud dormancy; endosperm; seed provisioning; Seed dormancy; parent-offspring conflicts; Ecology; Ekologi; Botany; Botanik;

    Abstract : This thesis considers the ecological and evolutionary significance of seed and bud dormancy. First, I present theoretical support to the idea that seed dormancy may evolve as a strategy to reduce sib competition in temporally homogeneous environments. READ MORE

  2. 2. Evolutionary Resolutions of Conflicts with Mates and Offspring

    Author : Roger Härdling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Clutch evolution; Arms race; Idothea baltica; Evolutionary conflicts; Sexual conflicts; Parent-offspring; Endosperm; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : In sexual conflicts and conflicts between parents and offspring, natural selection acts in different directions on the two sides. For example, males may be selected to achieve many mates, but female fitness may be maximised by monogamy. In this thesis I study the evolutionary outcome of these situations mainly by theoretical modelling. READ MORE

  3. 3. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests

    Author : Edu Efiom; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tropical rainforests; bushmeat hunting; primates; seedling recruitment; interseedling competition; community composition; functional traits; ecosystem services; human livelihoods;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 4. 4. Recalling Urban Nature : Linking City People to Ecosystem Services

    Author : Stephan Barthel; Carl Folke; Thomas Elmqvist; Johan Colding; Per Olsson; Susanne Stoll-Kleemann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecosystem service; functional group; resilience; social-ecological system; urban; institution; property right; knowledge; sense-of-place; social-ecological memory; adaptive governance; scale-crossing broker; ecosystem management; Biology; Biologi; Natural Resources Management; naturresurshushållning;

    Abstract : Societal development is dependent on the generation of ecosystem services (ES) to sustain it; however, many ES are degrading. This thesis investigates how social-ecological features behind practices of actor groups shape the generation of ES. READ MORE

  5. 5. The evolutionary ecology of plant reproductive diversity and floral signals : Mating system and floral scent in Arabis alpina

    Author : Hampus Petrén; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabis alpina; floral scent; intraspecific variation; mating system; parental conflict; phenotypic plasticity; phenotypic selection; reproductive isolation; speciation; volatile organic compound VOC ;

    Abstract : Flowering plants display an extraordinary floral- and reproductive diversity. Variation in the size, shape, colour and scent of flowers, and in systems and strategies of mating, is ubiquitous in comparisons of different species, but also exists among different conspecific populations.
