  1. 1. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer disease

    Author : Marie Oskarsson; Gunilla Westermark; Mikael Oliveberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; amyloid; IAPP; Abeta; type 2 diabetes; Alzheimer disease; BRICHOS; heparan sulfate; islet amyloid; amyloid plaques; seeding; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The misfolding and aggregation of the beta cell hormone islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) into amyloid fibrils is the main pathological finding in islets of Langerhans in type 2 diabetes. Pathological assemblies of IAPP are cytotoxic and believed to contribute to the loss of insulin-producing beta cells. READ MORE

  2. 2. A stargazer's guide to neurodegeneration : Astrocytes' role in the propagation of pathological proteins

    Author : Tobias Mothes; Anna Erlandsson; Martin Ingelsson; Linn Streubel-Gallasch; Maria Grazia Spillantini; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer’s disease; Parkinson’s disease; tauopathies; astrocyte; microglia; neuron; tau; amyloid-β; α-synuclein; accumulation; degradation; inflammation; spreading; seeding.; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are characterized by brain accumulation of pathogenic protein aggregates. In the AD brain, amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau form plaques respective tangles, while in the PD brain α-synuclein (α-syn) form Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. READ MORE

  3. 3. Recovery of Scandium using Antisolvent Crystallization in the Valorization of Scandium-containing Waste Streams

    Author : Edward Peters; Kerstin Forsberg; Michael Svärd; Jens-Petter Andreassen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Antisolvent crystallization; ammonium scandium hexafluoride; ammonium metal fluorides; phase equilibria; solubility; supersaturation; seeding; agitation mechanism; crystal size distribution; morphology; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Scandium is widely dispersed in the earth’s crust and is rarely concentrated in ores, and a viable option to guarantee a secure supply of scandium is to recover the metal from waste streams of other mining and metallurgical facilities. The valorization of such streams to recover metals of value is a prerequisite to alleviate the global shortages of scandium and other rare earth elements. READ MORE

  4. 4. Structural investigation of SOD1 aggregates in ALS : identification of prion strains using anti-peptide antibodies

    Author : Johan Bergh; Thomas Brännström; Stefan L. Marklund; Peter M. Andersen; Joakim Bergström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; SOD1; prion; motor neuron disease; neurodegeneration; strain; seeding; protein aggregation; transgenic mice; peptide antibodies; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons that result in muscle wasting. The symptoms advance gradually to paralysis and eventually death. Most patients suffer from sporadic ALS (sALS) but 10% report a familial predisposition. READ MORE

  5. 5. Apolipoprotein A-IV and Transthyretin in Swedish Forms of Systemic Amyloidosis

    Author : Joakim Bergström; Per Westermark; Giampaolo Merlini; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pathology; Amyloid; Fibril; Aggregation; Apolipoprotein A-IV; Transthyretin; Seeding; Senile systemic amyloidosis; Familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy; Patologi; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Over 20 different plasma proteins have been shown to have the capacity to undergo conformational changes and self-assemble into highly stable and insoluble amyloid fibrils. One, transthyretin (TTR), consists of 127 amino acid residues arranged in eight β-strands (named A to H) and is involved in two different clinical forms of amyloidosis. READ MORE
