1. Aerodynamic Investigation of Truck-Trailer Combinations
Abstract : In today’s society, increasing fuel prices and the constantly evolving emission legislation, forces the vehicle industry to develop new techniques for the propul- sion of vehicles, and optimization of existing technology. Trucks constitute a significant proportion of the transportation system, consequently it is of great importance to ensure as low an impact as possible on the environment. READ MORE

2. Active Flow Control for Drag Reduction of Heavy Vehicles
Abstract : This thesis considers the aerodynamics of trucks. The work focuses on the aerodynamic drag caused by the wake. Bluff-body flows are dominated by large dissipative vortex-shedding wakes with a low mean pressure compared to the high pressure on their frontal area. READ MORE

3. On modally distributed damping in heavy vehicles
Abstract : This thesis investigates passive damping system performance in heavy vehicles through analytical expressions, simulations with different vehicle models as well as through experimental evaluation in a tractor semi trailer combination. The objective is to study what levels of chassis suspension damping that are desirable for different vehicle modes and how this may be achieved with passive damping systems. READ MORE

4. Improving emergency braking performance of heavy vehicles
Abstract : Previous studies by the Cambridge Vehicle Dynamics Consortium (CVDC) have suggested that, by improving the control bandwidth of conventional Heavy Goods Vehicle(HGV) brake actuators and using a ‘slip control’ braking strategy, HGV stopping distances could be reduced by up to 30% over existing systems. The work covered in this thesis looks to: validate the CVDC’s previous braking performance predictions through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation, investigate how in-plane tyre dynamics may influence such a system’s performance, develop and build a next generation high-bandwidth braking system for vehicle implementation and carry out comparative back-to-back vehicle tests between the new system and commercially available HGV ABS. 5. Green Logistics through Modal Shift - exploring the role of the transport capacity contract
Abstract : Among policy-makers in Europe the modal shift - a shift från polluting modes of freight transport to less polluting modes - has been a popular suggestion for reducing CO2-emissions of transportation. In particular, intermodal road-rail solutions, where a combination of road and rail transport is utilized to move trailers and containers, have been stressed as an important measure to reach de desired reduction in emissions.
