  1. 21. Hearing in menopausal women and in women with Turner syndrome : a model for hearing matured in an estrogen-deficient environment

    Author : Christina Forshell Hederstierna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Epidemiological studies have shown that women have better high-frequency hearing than men in virtually all age groups, regardless of noise-exposure, and that agerelated hearing decline starts after age 30 in men but not until after the age of 50 in women. This coincides with the menopausal transition in most women, thus leading us to hypothesize that the menopause triggers auditory deterioration. READ MORE

  2. 22. Counteracting Acoustic Disturbances in Human Speech Communication

    Author : Nils Westerlund; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Speech Enhancement; Noise Reduction; Hearing Aids; Adaptive Feedback Control; Ear-Mic; Active Noise Control;

    Abstract : A signal can be said to be any information bearing unit or action carrying a message from a sender to a receiver. This definition covers a vast number of human and non-human actions, ranging from flirtation to satellite communication. This thesis deals with increasing the quality of one of the most ubiquitous human-to-human signals: Speech. READ MORE

  3. 23. Foxi1, an important gene for hearing, kidney function and male fertility

    Author : Hilmar Vidarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Aim: In this study we focused on the biological importance of the forkhead transcription factor Foxi1. The overall aim was to elucidate the functional role of Foxi1 in the inner ear, kidney and epididymis. READ MORE

  4. 24. Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in the central auditory system and correlations with the auditory periphery : the effects of noise and aging in mice

    Author : Esma Idrizbegovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Auditory; hearing loss; central auditory system; stereology; plasticity;

    Abstract : This study has examined how calcium binding protein immunoreactivity is modulated in the cochlear nucleus and the inferior colliculus after noise exposure and during aging in mice. The effect of noise exposure on calbindin-D28k (calbindin) and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the dorsal and posteroventral cochlear nucleus (DCN and PVCN) and inferior colliculus (IC) was studied in CBA/CBA mice by using two-dimensional quantification.
