1. On sepsis - epidemiology, prediction and diagnostics
Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to improve prediction, diagnostics and knowledge on epidemiology of sepsis. In paper I, we developed and evaluated an integrated platform for rapid analysis of sepsis-causing organisms directly from blood samples. READ MORE

2. Host response in sepsis
Abstract : Sepsis is a serious condition characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to an infection. Increased vascular leakage, vasodilation and heart failure cause circulatory disturbances challenging the intensivist. Despite modern medication and high technology supportive care, mortality is high. READ MORE

3. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock
Abstract : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. READ MORE

4. Novel Aspects of the Coagulation System in Host Defence
Abstract : Bacterial infections are a major global threat to public health and sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Sepsis incidence is rising, with supportive treatments and antibiotics being the main treatment possibilities. READ MORE

5. Quantitative detection of bacterial DNA in whole blood in bloodstream infection
Abstract : This thesis aims to increase the knowledge on how quantitative PCR can be used in the diagnostics of bloodstream infections, with an emphasis on quantitative elements. In Papers I and II, we evaluated quantitative data from two commercial PCR tests for pathogen detection directly in blood, Magicplex Sepsis (I) and SeptiFast (II), from patients with suspected sepsis.
