  1. 16. Structural Insights into the Acquisition and Storage of Iron

    Author : Ulrika Schagerlöf; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Strukturkemi; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik; Structure chemistry; single particle; ferric reductase; human phagocyte superoxide-generating NADPH oxidase; frataxin; cryo electron microscopy; FRO2; iron homeostasis; iron acquisition;

    Abstract : It is of vital importance to understand the systems for iron metabolism and this thesis contributes to this by providing insights into the structure and function of the acquisition and homeostasis of iron. The two proteins that have been primarily investigated are a ferric reductase from Arabidopsis thaliana called FRO2 and a mitochondrial iron chaperone from Saccharomyces cerevisiae called frataxin. 2. 17. Microbial Production of Bio-Based Chemicals: A Biorefinery Perspective

    Author : Tarek Dishisha; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biorefinery; platform chemical; organic acid; propionic acid; 3-hydroxypropionic acid; 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde; methacrylic acid; 1; 3-propanediol; Propionibacterium acidipropionici; Lactobacillus reuteri; Gluconobacter oxydans; high cell density fermentation; biotransformation; product inhibition; cell recycle; immobilized cells; chemical catalysis; pdu operon;

    Abstract : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. READ MORE

  3. 18. Microbial Degradation of Toxaphene

    Author : Martha Lacayo; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Enterobacter; Environmental technology; Bjerkandera; Toxaphene; Biodegradation; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This works deals with the degradation of a group of recalcitrant compounds known as toxaphene. Toxaphene is a complex mixture of chlorinated compounds including hexa- and octachlorocamphenes, hepta-, nona- and decachlorobornanes. Some components of toxaphene are very persistent while others are degraded rapidly by both abiotic and biotic processes. READ MORE
