  1. 1. Recognition molecules of the complement system: C1q and mannan-binding lectin in autoimmunity and immune defence

    Author : Ulla Mårtensson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; serologi; Immunologi; Immunology; serology; autoantibodies; collectins; complement; autoimmunity; Infections; Infektioner;

    Abstract : The C1 subcomponent C1q and the mannan-binding lectin (MBL) are recognition proteins of the complement system, and have similar structure. C1q binds to IgG and IgM and activates the classical pathway. MBL binds to carbohydrate structures and activates the lectin pathway. READ MORE

  2. 2. Apolipoprotein CIII and Ljungan virus in diabetes

    Author : Rebecka Holmberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : It has been shown that there are patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), whose sera induce an increased activity of voltage-gated Ca2+-channels in pancreatic beta-cells, resulting in increased cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and apoptosis. Purification of the protein in the active fraction of T1D sera revealed that the observed effects were mediated by apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII), and this protein was shown to be increased in serum from T1D patients. 3. 3. Serum proteins in type 1 diabetes

    Author : Nancy Dekki Wenna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : We have previously shown that there are patients with type 1 diabetes T1D whose sera interfere with cytoplasmic free Ca2+-concentration ([Ca2+]i), resulting in -cell apoptosis. In this study the frequency of sera, that induces this effect, was found to be around 35% in T1D patients, and 25% in first degree relatives (FDR) of T1D patients. READ MORE

  4. 4. Superantigens in group A streptococcus : gene diversity and humoral immune response

    Author : Linda Maripuu; Mari Norgren; Susan Hollingshead; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a strictly human pathogen that causes infections ranging from asymptomatic carriage to the highly lethal streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). GAS are classified according to the sequence of the variable 5’ end of the emm-gene that encodes the surface associated M-protein. READ MORE

  5. 5. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects

    Author : Mats Nyman; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []

    Abstract : In an 18-month period all throat cultures in our laboratory were examined for Arcanobacterium haemolyticum and clinical information was obtained. The great majority of the patients suffered from pharyngitis or tonsillitis, accompanied by a rash in 46% of cases. One third of the patients had a history of recurrent tonsillitis. READ MORE
