1. Antigen-specific islet antibodies: prediction of beta cell failure and differentiation between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
Abstract : Autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA), protein tyrosine-phosphatase-like protein (IAÐ2A), and/or pancreatic islet cells (ICA) are autoimmune markers usually present at diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is therefore in general believed to be caused by an immune-mediated beta cell destruction. READ MORE

2. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) : detection and elimination of infected blood cells in vitro, immune reactivity and complications following HCMV infection
Abstract : Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) belongs to the herpes virus family and establishes life-long persistence in a latent state following a primary infection. HCMV disease causes high morbidity in immunosuppressed individuals, such as bone marrow and organ transplant patients. READ MORE

3. Vaccine responses after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation in patients with hematological malignancies
Abstract : The prevention of infections in patients with hematological malignancies is important given the inherent immune deficiency associated with these diseases and the immunosuppressive effects of treatment. This thesis investigated the efficacy of vaccines against various pathogens among patients with hematological disease receiving chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation, including the longevity of vaccine responses. 4. HIV-1 infection in Tanzania : HIV antibody testing strategies and lymphocyte subset determinations
Abstract : The objectives of the studies that are reported in this thesis were to evaluate HIV antibody testing strategies and prognostic markers and to study inummological deterioration of HIV-1 infected individuals. Alternative testing strategies for confirmation of HIV seropositivity were evaluated using combinations of screening assays. READ MORE

5. Local and systemic inflammatory mediators and their relation to pressure-pain threshold and pain of the temporomandibular joint
Abstract : The first aim of this investigation was to investigate the validity of TMJ pressure-pain threshold for assessment of pain conditions of inflammatory nature in the TMJ. Pressure-pain threshold was recorded from the palpable lateral pole of the TMJ condyle with a hand-held electronic pressure algometer (Somedic Production AB, Sollentuna, Sweden). READ MORE
