  1. 1. Medin amyloid - a matter close to the heart : Studies on medin amyloid formation and involvement in aortic pathology

    Author : Annika Larsson; Per Westermark; Sari Kiuru-Enari; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AA amyloidosis; aging; amyloid; aneurysm; arterial media; dissection; elastin; medin amyloid; lactadherin; thoracic aorta; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Amyloidoses are a group of protein misfolding diseases characterized by deposits of insoluble fibrillar protein aggregates. Medin amyloid, which is the focus of this thesis, appears in the media of the thoracic aorta in nearly all individuals over 50 years. READ MORE

  2. 2. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis

    Author : Malgorzata Pokrzywa; Erik Lundgren; Damian Crowther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transthyretin; amyloid; amyloidosis; Drosophila; transthyretin-associated amyloidosis; Familial amyloid polyneuropathy; neurodegeneration; serum amyloid P component; Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs; drug screens; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. READ MORE

  3. 3. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals

    Author : Anders Lannergård; Göran Friman; Anders Larsson; Uwe Ewald; Jonas Hedlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; acute phase proteins; adult; Administration Oral; aminoglycosides; amyloidosis; antibiotics; bacterial infections; body temperature; C-reactive protein; cefuroxime; cystitis; cytokines; elderly; infant; interleukin-6; newborn; pyelonephritis; serum amyloid A protein; virus diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 4. 4. The Role Of Serum Amyloid A In Inflammatory Disease - Proinflammatory Mediator Or Inert Biomarker?

    Author : Lena Björkman; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : neutrophils; serum amyloid A; rheumatoid arthritis;

    Abstract : Abstract: Neutrophils are phagocytes of the innate immune system with prominent roles in host defense and are also believed to be important in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by accumulating in inflamed joints and contribute to tissues destruction. Neutrophils differentiate in the bone-marrow and are mature cells when entering circulation with a cytoplasm packed with granules that contain toxic substances in addition to receptors that can be up-regulated to the cell surface during activation. 5. 5. Tenomodulin, serum amyloid A and the serum amyloid A receptor selenoprotein S – implications for metabolic disease

    Author : Maja Olsson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity and obesity-related metabolic diseases are associated with a low-grade inflammation, including slightly increased serum levels of the acute phase protein serum amyloid A (A-SAA). A-SAA is one amongst several adipose tissue (AT) produced proteins suggested to influence development of metabolic diseases. READ MORE
