1. Sarcoidosis : inflammatory mechanisms and markers of activity
Abstract : Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by an accumulation of CD4+ T-lymphocytes in affected organs. Previous findings of an association between the HLA-allele DR17 and an accumulation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of CD4+ T-lymphocytes expressing the T-cell receptor (TCR) V gene segment AV2S3, is in line with an aetiological hypothesis claiming that sarcoidosis is elicited by a specific antigen(s) in genetically predisposed individuals. 2. Inflammatory markers and prognosis in acute coronary syndromes
Abstract : Background: Inflammation both accelerates atherosclerosis and contributes to the activation and rupture of the atherosclerotic plaque. Several markers of inflammation, such as CRP, have shown prognostic merit in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). READ MORE

3. Vascular and inflammatory markers in chronic kidney disease
Abstract : In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammation and malnutrition are harmful and highly prevalent conditions with influence on the atherosclerotic process and outcome. The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is substantially increased in CKD patients compared with healthy individuals. READ MORE

4. Preterm birth : parents' experiences, affect, stress and inflammatory markers
Abstract : Preterm birth (PTB), before 37 completed weeks of gestation, is the principal risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality. In Sweden about 5.6% of pregnant women deliver preterm. The etiology of PTB is not fully understood, but it has been suggested that the underlying mechanisms could have both biological and psychosocial origins. READ MORE

5. Obstructive pulmonary disease : Studies of acute exacerbations and immunologic status
Abstract : In this thesis, different aspects of the treatment and care of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been studied. In a study of 50 patients seeking medical care for an acute exacerbation of asthma or COPD, we studied inflammatory markers in blood, sputum and urine.
