  2. 2. Bioactivity of Medicinal Bolivian Andean plants. Effects on cell proliferation and related processes

    Author : Gloria Rodrigo; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bolivian medicinal plants; colon cancer; cell proliferation; DNA synthesis; apoptosis; caspase-3; sesquiterpene; curcuphenol; damsin; coronopilin;

    Abstract : Colon cancer is common in both developed and developing countries, and is responsible for at least 600,000 deaths globally every year. It is therefore the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality. Extensive studies are being conducted worldwide to find more effective drugs that can be used in cancer treatment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phylogenies and Secondary Chemistry in Arnica (Asteraceae)

    Author : Catarina Ekenäs; Katarina Andreasen; Anders Backlund; Lynn Bohs; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; phylogeny; ITS; ETS; RPB2; sesquiterpene lactones; PCA; bioassay; NF-κB; neutrophil; chloroplast; Biologi; Arnica; Asteraceae;

    Abstract : The genus Arnica (Asteraceae) was investigated for phylogenetic relationships and sesquiterpene lactone (STL) content with the aims to trace the evolutionary history of the genus and to investigate possible congruencies between DNA sequence data, secondary chemistry, and biological activity. Complex evolutionary patterns in Arnica are evident from phylogenetic analyses of chloroplast regions (the rpl16 and rps16 introns and the psbA–trnH, ycf4–cemA, and trnT–L spacers), nuclear ribosomal regions (the internal and external transcribed spacers) and the nuclear low-copy DNA region coding for the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) between exons 17 and 23. 4. 4. Exploring evolutionary and chemical space using chemoinformatic tools and traditional methods in pharmacognosy

    Author : Astrid Henz Ryen; Anders Backlund; Thierry Kogej; Fernando B. Da Costa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; angiosperm chemistry; physicochemical properties of plant specialized metabolites; chemical diversity; chemical space; sesquiterpene lactones; scaffold diversity; molecular framework; cluster analysis; ECFP6; Lindera benzoin; sesquiterpenes; anti-inflammatory; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The number of new drugs coming to the market is declining while interest in lead discovery from natural resources is seeing a revival. Although methods for isolation and identification of natural products have advanced tremendously, methods for selection of potential leads have fallen behind. READ MORE

  5. 5. Terpenoid Plant Metabolites - Structural Characterization and Biological Importance

    Author : Eliana Maldonado; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terpenoid Sesquiterpene lactones Breast-cancer cell lines Cytotoxicity Antileishmanicial Structural characterization;

    Abstract : In response to the challenges of their local environments, organisms produce of a large number of chemical diverse compounds with complex stereochemistry and reactive functional groups. These characteristics enable them to interact and bind specifically to biological target molecules and exert various biological activities, and have assured that Natural products continues to be an important source of bioactive compounds, which, for example, facilitate the search for new lead structures that can be developed into new pharmaceuticals.
