1. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs
Abstract : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 2. Bioactive Compounds from the Marine Sponge Geodia barretti : Characterization, Antifouling Activity and Molecular Targets
Abstract : The marine sponge Geodia barretti produces a range of secondary metabolites. Two of these compounds were isolated and elucidated guided by their ability to inhibit settlement of cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus improvisus. READ MORE

3. Studies of fish responses to the antifoulant medetomidine
Abstract : ABSTRACT Growth of marine organisms, fouling, on man-made constructions submerged in the water is regarded as a major problem. For vessels, fouling increases drag and thereby fuel consumption, wherefore antifouling paints are used. Traditionally, they contain toxic compounds, and several of these have unwanted effects in the environment. READ MORE

4. Algal-Bacterial Photobioreactors for the Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants
Abstract : The aerobic biodegradation of toxic organic volatile contaminants is always limited by the low aqueous solubility of O2. Therefore, intensive bubbling or surface aeration is required to supply the bacterial community with sufficient O2 to carry out pollutant mineralization. This can cause the hazardous volatilization of toxic volatile contaminants. READ MORE
