  1. 21. Deviant sexual behavior, hormones and sex-chromosomal relationship : A study in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR)

    Author : Anders Wall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; SHR; WKY; Rat; Copulatory performance; Deviant sexual behavior; Neuroendocrine mechanisms; Neonatal; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : The general aim of the present thesis was to gain insight into some biological factors that influencedeviant sexual performance. Two inbred strains selectively bred (hypertension) from the same Wistarrat colony were used: the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and its normotensive progenitor theWistar Kyoto rat (WKY). 2. 22. Avian Genome Evolution - Gene Expression, Gene Divergence and Sexual Dimorphism

    Author : Sara Naurin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sex chromosome; avian genome evolution; gene expression; sexual dimorphism; Z chromosome;

    Abstract : This study has focused on: (i) differences in how males and females use the genes in the genome, (ii) how sex chromosomes evolve and (iii) how the evolutionary rate of genes are affected by the chromosome on which they are located on and the gene expression level they experience. A large-scale microarray was developed for the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata and techniques were developed so that this microarray could also be used for wild passerine birds. READ MORE

  3. 23. On the Evolution of the Avian Transcriptome

    Author : Severin Uebbing; Hans Ellegren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; evolution; gene expression; regulation; RNA-seq; transcriptomics; proteomics; sex chromosome; dosage compensation; divergence; ASE; birds; Ficedula; flycatcher; chicken; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Change in gene expression is a powerful tool for evolution, because seemingly small expression changes can contribute important steps towards adaptation without necessarily affecting the whole organism. There is still much to learn about how gene expression evolves on genome- and population-wide levels, especially in non-model organisms. READ MORE

  4. 24. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system

    Abstract : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. READ MORE

  5. 25. The genomic basis of the response to female-limited X-chromosome evolution

    Author : Yesbol Manat; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X chromosome; Sex chromosome; Drosophila melanogaster; Experimental evolution; sexual selection; intralocus sexual conflict;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I attempted to achieve a better understanding of the nature of X-linked polymorphic loci using a female-limited X chromosome (FLX) experimental evolution in Drosophila melanogaster. I expected that expressing the evolved X chromosome will result in an increase in female fitness and a decrease in male fitness. READ MORE
