  1. 1. Subsurface Environmental Impact in Urban Areas. Shallow Groundwater Composition, Corrosion of Soil-Buried Constructions, and Leachates from Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

    Author : Malin Norin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GC MS screening; soil-buried constructions; subsurface urban environment; shallow groundwater quality; corrosion; reclaimed asphalt pavement;

    Abstract : Worldwide, groundwater represents the largest and most important source of potable water. Usually, urbanisation affects shallow urban aquifers in two ways: by radically changing patterns and rates of aquifer recharge, and by adversely affecting the quality of groundwater. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microbially mediated manganese oxides enriched in yttrium and rare earth elements in the Ytterby mine, Sweden

    Author : Susanne Sjöberg; Christophe Dupraz; Per Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; manganese oxidizers; birnessite; yttrium and rare earth elements YREE ; biofilms; shallow subsurface; Ytterby mine; geomicrobiology; microbial geochemistry; manganoxiderare; birnessit; yttrium och sällsynta jordartsmetaller YREE ; underjordisk; Ytterby mine; geomikrobiologi; mikrobiell kemi; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Microorganisms are able to manipulate redox reactions and thus exert extensive control on chemical speciation and element partitioning in nature, affecting the formation and dissolution of certain minerals. One of these redox active elements is manganese (Mn), which in its oxidized states (III/IV), commonly forms Mn oxide-hydroxide minerals. READ MORE

  3. 3. 2D and 3D Seismic Surveying at the CO2SINK Project Site, Ketzin, Germany: The Potential for Imaging the Shallow Subsurface

    Author : Sawasdee Yordkayhun; Christopher Juhlin; Charlotte Krawczyk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inversion; Traveltime tomography; 3D seismic surveys; Seismic velocity; Seismic source; CO2SINK project; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : Seismic traveltime inversion, traveltime tomography and seismic reflection techniques have been applied for two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) data acquired in conjunction with site characterization and monitoring aspects at a carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage site at Ketzin, Germany (the CO2SINK project). Conventional seismic methods that focused on investigating the CO2 storage and caprock formations showed a poor or no image of the upper 150 m. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental sanitation situation and solute transport in variably saturated soil in peri-urban Kampala

    Author : Robinah Kulabako; Roger Thunvik; Felix Mtalo; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental Sanitation; Kampala; Modelling; Phosphorus transport; Shallow groundwater; Peri-urban; Vadose zone; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : The environmental sanitation situation in Kampala’s peri-urban areas was reviewed and investigated through field studies, structured interviews with personnel from key institutions and administration of questionnaires to households in a selected peri-urban settlement (Bwaise III Parish).  In this settlement, specific field and laboratory measurements were undertaken so as to create a better understanding of the environmental sanitation situation, anthropogenic pollution loads and their transport and impact (with a focus on Phosphorus) in Kampala’s Peri-urban areas in pursuit of interventions for improving the environmental sanitation and protecting the shallow groundwater resource there. 5. 5. Subsurface fluxes of mass and energy at the accumulation zone of Lomonosovfonna ice cap, Svalbard

    Author : Sergey Marchenko; Veijo Pohjola; Rickard Pettersson; Carleen Reijmer; Thomas Schuler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glacier; ice sheet; sea level; runoff; ice; firn; snow; stratigraphy; density; core; radar; thermistor; temperature; preferential water flow; thermal conductivity; water content; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot naturgeografi; Earth Science with specialization in Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Glaciers cover ca 10% of the Earth's land and are found in the high altitudes and latitudes. They are important components of environmental systems due to the multiple feedbacks linking them with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and periglacial landscapes. READ MORE
