1. Severe Hemodilution - Clinical and Experimental Studies
Abstract : In children, it is often desirable to minimize allogenic blood transfusion, and this thesis explores the physiology of an alternative method of managing perioperative blood loss: hemodilution with Ringer´s dextran. Methods Clinical studies: Arterial pressure, superior caval venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) and blood lactate concentration (L) were studied during bone marrow harvesting (BMH) on 23 occasions in 19 children, 1-17 years of age, with healthy hearts and lungs. 2. Comparative analysis of the thermogenic protein UCP1 across the mammalian phylogeny
Abstract : Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) drives mitochondrial inefficiency to produce heat in mammalian brown adipose tissue (BAT). Many mammalian species rely on this form of adaptive non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) to defend high body temperatures in the cold. READ MORE

3. Clonidine in paediatric anaesthesia : pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects
Abstract : Clonidine is a mixed alpha-2/alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist. It reduces sympathetic and increases parasympathetic tone which results in a lowering of the baseline blood pressure and heart rate. READ MORE

4. Protection and treatment of hypothermia in prehospital trauma care : with emphasis on active warming
Abstract : Background: In prehospital trauma care active warming is recommended to aid in protection from further cooling. However, scientific evidence of the effectiveness of active warming in a clinical setting is scarce. Also, evaluating the effectiveness of active warming, especially in harsh ambient conditions, by objective measures, is difficult. READ MORE

5. Effects of Motion Sickness on Human Thermoregulatory Mechanisms
Abstract : The presented studies were performed to investigate the effects of motion sickness (MS) on human autonomic and behavioural thermoregulatory mechanisms during cold stress and in a thermoneutral environment. The roles of histaminergic and cholinergic neuron systems in autonomic thermoregulation and MS-dependent dysfunction of autonomic thermoregulation were studied using a histamine-receptor blocker, dimenhydrinate (DMH), and a muscarine-receptor blocker, scopolamine (Scop).
