  1. 1. Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunts in Children : Technical Considerations and Treatment of Certain Complications

    Author : Kai Arnell; Tomas Wester; Jan Sjölin; Per Enblad; Hans C-son Silander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; Hydrocephalus; papilloedema; abdominal cyst; cerebrospinal fluid shunt; shunt infection; intraventricular antibiotic instillation; intraventricular antibiotic concentrations; in-vitro testing; antisiphon device; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting is the most commonly used method for the treatment of paediatric hydrocephalus. Despite improved shunts and surgical techniques there are still complications. This retrospective study focuses on diagnoses and treatment of shunt malfunction and infections. Cost/benefit of using an adjustable shunt was assessed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functional and morphological MR studies in congenital cardiovascular malformations

    Author : Catarina Holmqvist; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medicinsk instrumentering; tomografi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; Contrast-enhanced MR angiography.; Coarctation; Intra-cardiac shunts; Conduits; Tetralogy of Fallot; Function; Flow; MR velocity mapping; Infants; Children; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Angiocardiography; Heart; Congenital heart defects; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to evaluate new MR techniques permitting qualitative and quantitative analysis of cardiac function and measurement of velocity and flow, and later on contrast-enhanced MR angiography, techniques largely unexplored in children with CHD. Infants with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect were examined pre-operatively. READ MORE

  3. 3. Diagnosis of interatrial shunts and the influence of patent foramen ovale on oxygen desaturation in obstructive sleep apnea

    Author : Magnus C Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Patent foramen ovale; atrial septal defect; obstructive sleep apnea; contrast transesophageal echocardiography; percutaneous closure;

    Abstract : Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is found in 27% of the population and although mostly asymptomatic, PFO has been associated with e.g. cryptogenic stroke and, rarely, also with oxygen desaturation. PFO and atrial septal defects may nowadays be closed percutaneously without open heart surgery. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interventional closure of persistent foetal cardiac shunts including PDA and PFO : study of outcome, complications and novel methods

    Author : Kristoffer Jonathan Steiner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Persistent foramen ovale (PFO) and persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) are two of the most common congenital heart defects (CHD). The incidence of PFO is reported to be between 10% and 35% (1, 2). In term infants, a PDA is seen in around one in 2000 births, accounting for 5% to 10% of all congenital heart disease (3, 4). 5. 5. Aspects of pediatric hemodynamics. A study of young children undergoing corrective heart surgery

    Author : Theódór Sigurdsson; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiac output; Heart surgery; Hemodynamics; Intracardiac shunt; Volume estimation; Young children;

    Abstract : AbstractBackground: Assessing critically ill patients is demanding because their clinical signs are not always easy to interpret. This is particularly true for pediatric patients, due to their small size and robust circulatory compensatorymechanism. READ MORE
