  1. 6. Regulation of morphogen signalling during neural patterning in the Xenopus embryo

    Author : Hooi Min Tan Grahn; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Suppressor-of-fused; Gli; β-Catenin; Neural; Xenopus; FGF; Signalling; HtrA1; RDH10; Retinol dehydrogenase; Retinoic acid; Spemann s organizer; Induction; Gradient;

    Abstract : Morphogens such as Hedghog, Wnt, FGF, and retinoic acid are important signals whose concentrations need to be tightly regulated in the vertebrate embryo to ensure body axis development and formation of the central nervous system. We first show that the intracellular cytoplasmic protein XSufu acts as a dual regulator of Hedgehog (Hh) and Wnt signals during neural induction and patterning in the Xenopus embryo. READ MORE

  2. 7. Pro- and anti-inflammatory regulation of β2 integrin signalling in human neutrophils

    Author : Veronika Brodin Patcha; Eva Särndahl; Emmanuelle Caron; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; inflammation; neutrophils; signalling; integrins; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The body is under constant attack from pathogens trying to slip by our immune defence. If the barrier is breached, invading pathogens enter the tissues and cause inflammation. During this process neutrophils, constituting the first line of defence, leave the bloodstream and seek out and kill the invading pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 8. Protein tyrosine kinases and the regulation of signalling and adhesion in drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Caroline Grabbe; Ruth Palmer; Tapio Heino; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila; Signalling; Adhesion; Protein Tyrosine Kinase; Development; Endocytosis; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : In order to build a multi-cellular organism and to regulate cellular functions, cells need to communicate with each other, as well as tightly regulate their behaviour in response to environmental changes. For these purposes all eukaryotic cells express a large number of membrane spanning receptors that either themselves contain catalytic activity or via cytoplasmic effector enzymes, function to transmit “signals” from the cell exterior to induce appropriate responses within the cell. 4. 9. Wnt-5a Signalling in Human Mammary Cells: Implications for the Development of Breast Cancer

    Author : Marzieh Jönsson; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; oncology; Cytology; signalling; breast cancer; Wnt-5a; mammary epithelial cells; cancer; onkologi; Cytologi; cancerology;

    Abstract : The Wnt-5a gene encodes a secreted protein that regulates several normal processes in embryonic and adult tissues by as yet unknown mechanisms. Expression of Wnt-5a protein does not cause cell transformation, but it instead counteracts the effects induced by transforming Wnts. READ MORE

  5. 10. OX1 Orexin Receptor Signalling to Phospholipases

    Author : Marie Ekholm; Jyrki Kukkonen; Graeme Milligan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : orexin; phospholipase; Calcium; cell signalling; G protein coupled receptor; ERK; live-cell imaging; arachidonic acid; diacylglycerol;

    Abstract : The neuropeptides orexin-A and orexin-B were discovered in 1998 and were first described as regulators of feeding behaviour. Later research has shown that they have an important role in the regulation of sleep. Two G protein-coupled receptors, OX1 and OX2 orexin receptors, mediate the cellular responses to orexins.
