1. Structural Silicides - Processing, Microstructure and Toughening
Abstract : Molybdenum disilicide is a promising candidate material for high temperature structural uses. However, its room-temperature toughness is rather low and has to be improved. The objective of this thesis is to improve the fracture toughness of MoSi2 by alloying and composite processes. READ MORE

2. Fabrication and Corrosion Properties of Nickel Silicides Thin Films
Abstract : Surface engineering is a vital issue in engineering materials design. The enhancement of surface properties extends the materials lifetime and improves the materials performance without changing the bulk properties. Thin film deposition is one of the most commonly applied techniques in this field. READ MORE

3. Thin Mn silicide and germanide layers studied by photoemission and STM
Abstract : The research presented in this thesis concerns experimental studies of thin manganese silicide and germanide layers, grown by solid phase epitaxy on the Si(111)7×7 and the Ge(111)c(2×8) surfaces, respectively. The atomic and electronic structures, as well as growth modes of the epitaxial Mn-Si and Mn-Ge layers, were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), core-level spectroscopy (CLS), and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). 4. Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy and Spectroscopy of Adsorbates on Aluminium and Silicon
Abstract : The main topic of this thesis is the investigation of atomic andmolecular adsorbates on single crystal surfaces of silicon and aluminiumusing the techniques of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) andspectroscopy (STS). The emphasis has been to use atomic-resolutionspectroscopy and imaging to determine the relationship between thesurfaces' geometric and electronic structures. READ MORE
