1. Silicon neural interfaces -Design and biomedical aspects-
Abstract : This thesis covers the development of a silicon neural interface, with focus on silicon sieve electrode fabrication, design, nerve regeneration, signal recording and biocompatibility. A study of how the via hole size and transparency of the perforated sieve membrane influences the nerve regeneration is presented together with a study on soft tissue responses to planar and porous silicon. 2. Silicon Nanopore Arrays : Fabrication and Applications for DNA Sensing
Abstract : Nanopore biomolecule sensing and sequencing has emerged as a simple but powerful tool for single molecule studies over the past two decades. By elec- trophoretically driving single molecules through a nanometer-sized pore, often sitting in an insulating membrane that separates two buffer solutions, ionic current blockades can be detected to reveal rich information of the molecules, such as DNA length, protein size and conformation, even nucleic acid se- quence. 3. Design, Fabrication and Optimization of Thermal Radiation Detectors Based on Thin Polymer Membranes
Abstract : The number of applications in which infrared radiation sensors are used is increasing. In some applications, the cost of the sensor itself is an issue, and simple solutions are thus required. In this thesis, the investigations have related to the use of thin polymer membranes in thermal infrared sensors, such as bolometers and thermopiles. READ MORE

4. Planar-Goubau-line components for terahertz applications
Abstract : Terahertz-wave technology has a broad range of applications, including radio astronomy, telecommunications, security, medical applications, pharmaceutical quality control, and biological sensing. However, the sources, detectors, and components are less efficient at this frequency band due to parasitic effects and increased total losses, which hinder the performance of terahertz systems. 5. Luminescent Silicon Nanocrystals: From Single Quantum Dot to Light-harvesting Devices
Abstract : Silicon (Si) serves as the basic material of the system-on-a-chip industry and photovoltaic panels nowadays. This is mostly thanks to its high abundance in the earth’s crust, thereby low cost, virtually non-toxicity, and superior stability. READ MORE
