  1. 1. Micromechanics of Fiber Networks

    Author : Svetlana Borodulina; Artem Kulachenko; Sören Östlund; Mikael Nygårds; Pierre J.J. Dumont; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Network simulation; Mechanical properties; Fibers; Fiber-to-fiber bonds; Free fiber length; Number of contacts; Contact density; Paper properties; X-ray microtomography; Hållfasthetslära; Solid Mechanics;

    Abstract : The current trends in papermaking involve, but are not limited to, maintaining the dry strength of paper material at a reduced cost. Since any small changes in the process affect several factors at once, it is difficult to relate the exact impact of these changes promptly. READ MORE

  2. 2. Beam-to-Beam Contact and Its Application to Micromechanical Simulation of Fiber Networks

    Author : Hamid Reza Motamedian; Artem Kulachenko; Umberto Perego; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fiber network; beam-to-beam contact; rotational contact; non-consistent; simulation; finite element; multiscale; microscale; micromechanics; paper; refining; beating; fine; hygroexpansion; shrinkage; drying; Hållfasthetslära; Solid Mechanics;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis covers the topic of modeling the three-dimensional fiber net- works with the finite element method. It contains the part addressing the numerical aspects of the modeling, namely, the contact formulation and application of the developed methods to the fundamental questions such as the effect of randomness in fiber properties and effect of fines and hygroexpansion. 3. 3. Numerical modeling of air-fiber flows

    Author : Jelena Andric; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aggregation; particle-level simulation; rheology; fiber; dry-forming; fiber suspension;

    Abstract : The dynamics of fiber suspensions are of great importance in applications such as the dry-forming process of pulp mats for use in hygiene products. In this forming process, fibers are transported in flowing air. The fibers interact with the fluid, and may interact with each other and interlock in flocs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modelling and simulation of paper structure development

    Author : Stefan B Lindström; Tetsu Uesaka; Myat Htun; Cyrus Aidun; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Forming; Fibre; Paper; Fibre suspension; Paper structure; Simulation; Rheology; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik; Engineering physics; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract :      A numerical tool has been developed for particle-level simulations of fibre suspension flows, particularly forming of the fibre network structure of paper sheets in the paper machine. The model considers inert fibres of various equilibrium shapes, and finite stiffness, interacting with each other through normal, frictional, and lubrication forces, and with the surrounding fluid medium through hydrodynamic forces. 5. 5. A Model for Simulation of Fiber Suspension Flows

    Author : David Hammarström; KTH; []
    Keywords : rheology; fiber; suspension; CFD; model; wall; slip; turbulence;

    Abstract : The fiber suspensions in the production line from wood topaper are subjected to many types of chemical and mechanicalprocesses, in which the flow of the suspension is of vitalimportance. The flow of the suspension determines the degree ofuniformity of the fibers through the processing, which inreturn affects the properties of the fiber suspension. READ MORE
