  1. 1. Single-Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy in Magnetic Nanoparticles and Molecular Magnets

    Author : Lukasz Michalak; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; master equation; magnetic nanoparticles; spin accumulation; molecular magnets; TMR; tunneling magnetoresistance; F-SET; ferromagnetic single-electron transistor; single-electron tunneling; nanomagnetism; spintronics; Coulomb blockade;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with single-electron tunneling in transistor-like devices in which the central electrode is either a metal nanoparticle (possibly ferromagnetic) or a molecular magnet. The investigated systems split into two different categories, depending on the size of the central island. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fuel conversion and ash formation interactions : a thermochemical study on lignocellulosic biomass

    Author : Anna Strandberg; Markus Broström; Rainer Backman; Christoffer Boman; Maria Zevenhoven; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Char conversion; pyrolysis; devolatilization; ash transformation; biomass; fuel characterization; fuel composition; ash composition; silicate formation; carbonate formation; thermogravimetric analysis; micro-tomography;

    Abstract : Biomass is considered to be CO2 neutral, and to be able to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels the need for expanded and sustainable biomass feedstock is increasing. Ash-related problems are some of the most important aspects of this increasing use of new biomass assortments in thermal energy conversion systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Frictional Effects on Hertzian Contact and Fracture

    Author : Denis Jelagin; Per-Lennart Larsson; Bertil Storåkers; David Hills; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Contact mechanics; Elastic material; Friction; Nanoindentation; Fracture; Solid mechanics; Fastkroppsmekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses normal axisymmetric contact of dissimilar elastic solids at finite interfacial friction. It is shown that in the case of smooth and convex but otherwise arbitrary contact profiles and monotonically increasing loading a single stick-slip contour evolves being independent of loading and profile geometry. 4. 4. Thermoelectric experiments on nanowire-based quantum dots

    Author : Artis Svilans; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Quantum dots; Nanowire; Thermoelectric; Maximum power; Efficientcy; Carnot; Kondo effect; Fysicumarkivet A:2018:Svilans;

    Abstract : This thesis experimentally investigates the possibilities of using quantum effects in semiconductor nanostructures for engineering their thermoelectric properties. More specifically, heterostructured InAs/InP nanowires are used to create short InAs quantum dots (QDs) with electronic state structure resembling that found in atoms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Health‐related quality of life, depression, sleep and breathing disorders in the elderly : With focus on those with impaired systolic function/heart failure

    Author : Peter Johansson; Ulf Dahlström; Anders Broström; Urban Alehagen; Peter Währborg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Elderly; cardiac function; chronic heart failure; health-related quality of life; depressive symptoms; prognosis; sleep disturbances; sleep disordered breathing; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe the prevalence of depressive symptoms, sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and sleep complaints, as well as to investigate the prognostic value of health-related quality of life (Hr-QoL) and depressive symptoms on mortality in an elderly community living population with a focus on those with impaired systolic function/heart failure (HF). Descriptive, prognostic and explorative study designs were used to examine if a single question about global perceived health (GPH) is associated with the domains of Hr-QoL as assessed by the SF-36 (I), as well as to evaluate whether GPH provided prognostic information concerning cardiovascular mortality (II).
