1. Spatially resolved and single cell transcriptomics
Abstract : In recent years, massive parallel sequencing has revolutionized the field of biology and has provided us with a vast number of new discoveries in fields such as neurology, developmental biology and cancer research. A significant area is deciphering gene expression patterns, as well as other aspects of transcriptome information, such as the impact of splice variants and mutations on biological functions and disease development. 2. Single-cell RNA sequencing as a tool to study panarthropod evolution
Abstract : Panarthropoda is a monophyletic group comprised of arthropods and lobopods, molting animals with a segmented body, paired appendages, dorsal brain, and ventral nerve cords. Evolutionary Developmental Biology (EvoDevo) is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand how changes in development form the basis for variations in morphology and phenotypic evolution, including the genetic network underlying these processes. 3. iLocks: a novel tool for RNA assays with improved specificity
Abstract : The Central Dogma of molecular biology describes a framework for how genetic information is transferred in cells, placing RNA as a messenger between DNA and translated proteins. During the last years, interest in RNA research has grown tremendously due to the increasing understanding and recognition of the importance of RNA in regulation of gene expression, biochemical catalysis, and genome integrity surveillance. 4. Single-cell methodologies for ecological and metabolic mapping of mixotrophic microeukaryotes
Abstract : Mixotrophy in aquatic protists is pivotal for our understanding of aquatic microbial food web dynamics. This thesis is centered around aquatic unicellular mixotrophs, and comprises three methodological approaches aimed to tackle mixotroph ecology at single-cell resolution: the identification of actively feeding mixotrophs in natural samples, the determination of specific interactions among mixotrophs and bacterial prey, and the profiling of two distinct mixotrophic populations based on the gene expression of their constitutive individuals. 5. Progression of RNA-sequencing to single-cell applications
Abstract : New methods enable new discoveries. My time as a PhD student has run in parallel with the maturation of the RNA-seq method, and I have used it to discover basic properties of gene expression and transcriptomes. My part has been bioinformatics – the computer analysis of biological data. READ MORE
