1. Live Single Cell Imaging and Analysis Using Microfluidic Devices
Abstract : Today many cell biological techniques study large cell populations where an average estimate of individual cells’ behavior is observed. On the other hand, single cell analysis is required for studying functional heterogeneities between cells within populations. READ MORE

2. Droplet microfluidics for single cell and nucleic acid analysis
Abstract : Droplet microfluidics is an emerging technology for analysis of single cells and biomolecules at high throughput. The controlled encapsulation of particles along with the surrounding microenvironment in discrete droplets, which acts as miniaturized reaction vessels, allows millions of particles to be screened in parallel. 3. Micro-scale Platforms for Investigations of Biological Structures
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of innovative micro-scale platforms as a means to address the current challenges within the field of cell biology, and to provide an interface between miniaturized analytical technology and experimental systems for the life sciences. The work includes an analytical platform for rapid assessment of the viability of adherent single cells; a surface patterning strategy for investigations of cell-to-cell communication via protrusions; a versatile microfluidic probe in SU-8 hard-polymer, and a microfabricated millimeter-wave measurement system for the identification and characterization of niosome (non-ionic surfactant vesicle) constituents, which is operated in a label-free, non-invasive manner. 4. New insights on type 2 immunity key drivers : mast cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells
Abstract : Type 2 immune responses are characterized by the production of cytokines IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13. They are known to have crucial physiological and pathophysiological functions in the body. Data from recent studies indicate their importance in the containment and clearance of helminth infections. READ MORE

5. Mathematical Modelling of Cellular Ageing: a Multi-Scale Perspective
Abstract : In a growing and increasingly older population, we are progressively challenged by the impact of ageing on individuals and society. The UN declared the years 2021-2030 as the Decade of Healthy Ageing, highlighting the efforts to minimise the burden of ageing and age-related diseases. READ MORE
