  1. 1. Studies of acoustic waves, noise and charge pumping using single-electron devices

    Author : Martin Gustafsson; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-electron pump; single-electron transistor; surface acoustic wave; single-electron devices; charge pumping; TLF; SINIS turnstile; electrometer; two-level fluctuator; single-photon detector; noise; SAW; SET;

    Abstract : This thesis covers a range of experiments on single-electron devices, electrical circuits that utilize the discreetness of the electron charge. The Single-Electron Transistor (SET) is of special importance among these, being the most sensitive electrometer demonstrated, and sufficiently mature to serve as a building block in sensors and detectors for physical phenomena that can be transformed into charge signals. 2. 2. Dynamics and Fluctuations in Single-Electron Tunneling Devices

    Author : Niklas Dittmann; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum dot; time-dependent density-functional theory; perturbation theory; single-electron source;

    Abstract : In recent years, it has been routinely achieved to build nanoscale electronic devices, which generate current pulses carrying only a single elementary charge. Realizations of these single-electron emitters are based on time-dependently driven quantum dots, on single-electron turnstiles built from superconductor/normal-metal hybrid structures, and also on nanosystems employing Lorentzian voltage pulses or surface acoustic waves. 3. 3. Heat Transport from On-demand Single-Electron Sources

    Author : Nastaran Dashti; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fluctuations and noise; thermoelectric devices; energy-selective detector; single-electron source; charge and heat currents;

    Abstract : The controlled injection of quantized charge excitations from single-electron emitters into nanoscopic conductors sets the basis for many important applications ranging from metrology to the emerging field of quantum optics with electrons. Successful implementation of these applications relies not only on achieving control on the precision of the particle emission, but also on the energetic properties of the injected particles. 4. 4. Single-Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy in Magnetic Nanoparticles and Molecular Magnets

    Author : Lukasz Michalak; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; master equation; magnetic nanoparticles; spin accumulation; molecular magnets; TMR; tunneling magnetoresistance; F-SET; ferromagnetic single-electron transistor; single-electron tunneling; nanomagnetism; spintronics; Coulomb blockade;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with single-electron tunneling in transistor-like devices in which the central electrode is either a metal nanoparticle (possibly ferromagnetic) or a molecular magnet. The investigated systems split into two different categories, depending on the size of the central island. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nanofabrication of Single Electron Transistors and Evaluation of Miniature Biosensors

    Author : Linda G. M. Olofsson; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : miniaturization; nanoparticles; impedance; single electron tunneling; biosensors; surface plasmon resonance;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with miniaturization in two different fields: electronics and biosensing. The first part deals with fabrication and measurements of two nanoscale structures - a self-assembled single electron transistor and a (potential) single junction device. READ MORE
