1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia
Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. Antibody responses and Fc gamma receptor IIa polymorphism in relation to Plasmodium falciparum malaria
Abstract : Immunity to asexual blood-stage of Plasmodium falciparum malaria is believed to be associated with protective antibodies of certain immunoglobulin classes and subclasses. This thesis addressed the importance of antibodies in relation to malaria infection and their effective interactions with Fc gamma receptor IIa (FcyRIIa) polymorphisms. READ MORE

3. Single nucleotide polymorphisms related to immune responses in Plasmodium falciparum malaria
Abstract : The current research is directed towards dissection of host genetic factors involved in host immune response and the malaria disease outcome. A possible association between FcγRIIa polymorphism and anti-malarial antibody (A.M.A) responses were investigated in Sudanese patients in relation to clinical outcome of falciparum malaria. 4. Functional analysis of the -1087 single nucleotide polymorphism in the IL-10 promoter region
Abstract : Interleukin (IL) 10 is recognized as a pro-inflammatory cytokine that promotes B cell proliferation. The objectives of the present series of studies were to analyze (i) differences in transcription factor binding to the -1087 IL-10 gene polymorphism in B cells, (ii) the influence of the A to G nucleotide transition on IL-10 and Sp1 gene expression in B cells, (iii) differences in Sp1 expression in periodontitis lesions from GG and AA genotype subjects and (iv) epigenetic modifications around the -1087 site and their influence on IL-10 gene expression. 5. The Histidine-rich Glycoprotein in Reproduction
Abstract : Infertility affects 15% of reproductive-aged couples. The milieu surrounding the growing embryo is of outmost importance, and should be optimised during in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Many biological processes, such as angiogenesis, coagulation, and immune processes need to be well regulated for a pregnancy to occur and progress normally. READ MORE
