  1. 6. Effects of inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon on pelagic food webs in boreal lakes

    Author : Anne Deininger; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Jan Karlsson; Antonia Liess; Carolyn L. Faithfull; John A. Downing; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; autochthony; basal production; boreal; global change; dissolved organic carbon; food web efficiency; N deposition; phytoplankton; seston stoichiometry; whole lake enrichment; zooplankton; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Anthropogenic activities are increasing inorganic nitrogen (N) loadings to lakes in the northern hemisphere. In many boreal lakes phytoplankton are N limited, wherefore enhanced N input may affect the productivity of pelagic food webs. READ MORE

  2. 7. Food Quality Effects on Zooplankton Growth and Energy Transfer in Pelagic Freshwater Food Webs

    Author : Jonas Persson; Tobias Vrede; Peter Eklöv; Ellen van Donk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; elemental stoichiometry; phosphorus; polyunsaturated fatty acids; EPA; oligotrophic lakes; empirical modelling; Daphnia; Cladocera; Copepoda; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Poor food quality can have large negative effects on zooplankton growth and this can also affect food web interactions. The main aims of this thesis were to study the importance of different food quality aspects in Daphnia, to identify potentially important differences among zooplankton taxa, and to put food quality research into a natural context by identifying the importance of food quality and quantity in lakes of different nutrient content. 3. 8. The effects of crayfish on interactions in freshwater benthic communities

    Author : Per Nyström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exotic species; trophic cascades; omnivory; crayfish; Trophic interactions; freshwater; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines how freshwater crayfish affect community interactions in benthic food webs. I have mainly studied the influence of the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on littoral communities, but also the influence of the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). 4. 9. Monitoring Water Availability in Northern Inland Waters from Space

    Author : Saeid Aminjafari; Fernando Jaramillo; Ian Brown; Cathleen Jones; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Water occurrence; Lake water level; Remote sensing; Altimetry; D-InSAR; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : River deltas and lakes support biodiversity and offer crucial ecosystem services such as freshwater provision, flood control, and fishing. However, climate change and human activities have affected deltas and lakes globally, altering the services they provide. READ MORE

  5. 10. Effects of dissolved humic matter on phytoplankton

    Author : Jessica von Einem; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; PAR; DOC; Water colour; production;

    Abstract : Water colour is currently increasing in thousands of lakes in the northern hemisphere due to an increased input of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and more specifically coloured disscolved humic matter (DHM). I studied how water colour affects the light climate in the epilimnion and, as a consequence, phytoplankton biomass, species composition and production in lakes in southern Sweden. READ MORE
