  1. 6. To grip and not to slip : sensorimotor mechanisms in reactive control of grasp stability

    Author : Charlotte Häger Ross; Roland S. Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human; hand; precision grip; grasp force; friction; cutaneous mechanoreceptors; sensorimotor integration; motor control;

    Abstract : The reactive control of fingertip forces maintaining grasp stability was examined in man during a prehensile task. Blindfolded subjects used the precision grip between the tips of index finger and thumb to restrain an object that was subjected to unpredictable load forces. These were delivered tangential to the parallel grip surfaces of the object. READ MORE

  2. 7. Flow over rough surfaces, and conjugate heat transfer, in engineering applications

    Author : Bercelay Niebles Atencio; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Naphthalene Sublimation Tecnhique; Antifouling paint; convective heat transfer; Roughness Function; correlation; CFD; RANS; stator channel; electric generator; Impinging Jet; Skin-Friction Drag; Rotating Disk; Ship Hull;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on two important topics in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer that were treated separately. On the one hand, the flow over rough surfaces, which is not yet completely understood, despite of the fact that it has an important implication in many engineering applications, especially in the naval industry for ships and boats because the friction drag caused by fouling, antifouling coatings and roughness in general impacts the fuel consumption and toxic emissions to the atmosphere. 3. 8. Numerical studies on flows with secondary motion

    Author : Jacopo Canton; Philipp Schlatter; David Moxey; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear dynamical systems; instability; bifurcation; flow control; skin-friction reduction; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : This work is concerned with the study of flow stability and turbulence control - two old but still open problems of fluid mechanics. The topics are distinct and are (currently) approached from different directions and with different strategies. READ MORE

  4. 9. On the local properties of compressible filter cakes

    Author : Tuve Mattsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; local filtration properties; dead-end filtration; particle interactions; cake filtration; skin formation; constitutive relationships; modelling; solid-liquid separation;

    Abstract : Filtration as a means of separating solids from liquids is an important unit operation employed in a range of different industrial sectors, of which the forest products, mineral, chemical process and pharmaceutical industries are but a few. Accurate and applicable models for the filtration unit operation are imperative if industrial filtration equipment is to be designed correctly. READ MORE

  5. 10. Tactile Sensory Control of Dexterous Manipulation in Humans

    Author : Ingvars Birznieks; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; cutaneous sensibility; tactile afferents; fingertip force; grasp stability; human hand; manipulation; object shape; precision grip; sensorimotor control; coding; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : During dexterous manipulation with the fingertips, forces are applied to objects' surfaces. To achieve grasp stability, these forces must be appropriate given the properties of the objects and the skin of the fingertips, and the nature of the task. READ MORE
