  1. 1. Movements in the dark : flying, landing and walking in insects

    Author : THERESE REBER; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect; vision; light intensity; bumblebee; retina; behavioural adaptation; flight; landing; dung beetle; nocturnal adaptation; sky compass; straight-line orientation;

    Abstract : Flying, as well as walking insects rely on vision to regulate locomotion, even in the dark when the visual system is much less reliable. To manage visual control of these behaviours at low light intensities, many insects have evolved optical adaptations, such as larger facet lenses and wider rhabdoms, and neural adaptations, such as spatial and temporal summation, to increase their visual sensitivity. 2. 2. Celestial Orientation in Dim Light

    Author : Marie Dacke; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polarisation pattern; moon; polrised light detection; twilight; dim light; dung beetle; Zoologi; spider; vision; orientation; Zoology;

    Abstract : The polarization pattern of skylight offers many animals a reference for visual compass orientation. In those cases when this optical compass is identified, the receptors involved are often confined to a small part of an eye built predominantly for other visual tasks. READ MORE

  3. 3. There and back again : The neural basis of migration in the Bogong moth

    Author : Andrea Adden; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a small, night-active Australian moth that has a remarkable lifestyle. Afterhatching from its pupa in spring, it migrates over 1000 km to the Australian Alps, where it spends the summer incool alpine caves. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bird orientation: external cues and ecological factors

    Author : Johan Bäckman; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tracking radar; Emlen funnel.; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; oscillatory orientation; roosting flight; scatter; concentration; heading; cue calibration; light dependent; magnetoreception; subcutaneous fat stores; body condition; energetics; geomagnetic field; visual cues; orientation; birds; migration;

    Abstract : Birds are generally capable of accurate orientation. In this thesis I present studies about the external cues and the ecological factors that influences bird orientation. A multitude of environmental cues are used to select and maintain a proper direction. READ MORE
