  1. 1. Regulation of TGF-β/Smad Signaling Through Smad Interacting Proteins

    Author : Fumiko Itoh; Carl-Henrik Heldin; Peter ten Dijke; Carlos F. Ibáñez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily members are multi-functional regulators of cell fate. These factors signal by binding to a limited number of highly conserved transmembrane type I and type II serine/threonine kinase receptors. These receptors initiate signals into the cell via the Smad proteins. READ MORE

  2. 2. Smad7 in TGF-β Signalling

    Author : Greger Brodin; Stefan Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; TGF-β; Smad7; Prostate; Transcription; Gene targeting; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology;

    Abstract : Members of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of growth and differentiation factors regulate a vast array of biological functions in the adult, and are of great importance in governing cell fate determination and patterning in the developing embryo. The TGF-β signal is propagated intracellularly by Smad proteins resulting in transcriptional responses. READ MORE

  3. 3. Molecular studies of pancreatic cancer: Characterization of the transforming growth factor beta signaling pathway

    Author : Tord Jonson; Avdelningen för klinisk genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SMAD4; PCR; FISH; cytogenetics; chromosome; pancreatic cancer; TGFB signaling; cytogenetik; Genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, genetic abnormalities in pancreatic cancer were studied, with special emphasis on alterations of components involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) signaling pathway. In the first study, fluorescence in situ hybridization and cytogenetic analyses revealed aberrations of chromosome 18 in all 13 pancreatic carcinoma cell lines studied, in particular frequent breaks close to the centromere of chromosome arm 18q. 4. 4. Growth control mechanisms in normal and neoplastic mammalian cells

    Author : Mozhgan Afrakhte; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; PDGF-AA; TGF-beta; Inhibitory SMADs; Growth inhibition; CDK; CKI; Cdc25A; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The main theme of the studies presented in this thesis is, the growth control mechanisms whose loss in normal cells predispose to or cause cancer. The balance between growth inhibitory and stimulatory mechanisms is crucial for the development and maintenance of a normal animal. READ MORE

  5. 5. Keloids - A fibroproliferative disease

    Author : Oliver Seifert (Bock); Inger Rosdahl; Mona Ståhle; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; keloid; TGF-beta; SMAD; quality of life; Dermatology and venerology; Dermatologi och venerologi;

    Abstract : Keloids are a fibroproliferative disorder of unknown etiology developing in the skin after injury or spontaneously. The aim of this thesis is to gain deeper insight into the role of TGF-β and its signaling pathway proteins, SMADs, in the pathogenesis of keloids and describe the gene expression profile in different keloid sites in the search for potential target genes for future treatment.
